It was not known whether Mao favored leftist or rightist • The Rightists or Moderates were the wing of CCP led by Zhou Enlai, the Prime Minister • He did not want to repeat mistakes of Great Leap and he wanted to move China forward with economic reform • Deng Xiaoping excused of taking the capitalistic road • In 1969, Deng was sent down to countryside and placed under house arrest there • Deng returns to Beijing in 1973 • After Cultural Rev, there was a restoration of rightist and the strength of the Party Struggle for succession
