  2. Prospective phlebotomists in Arizona have a number of training options. Phoenix College and Coconino Community College in Flagstaff are two of the largest community colleges in the state to offer allied health programs. A phlebotomy certificate program is available at both schools.

  3. Phoenix College's Phlebotomy Training Program • Phoenix College is one of ten campuses in the Maricopa Community College System. The school provides career training and transfer programs to over 30,000 students. A certificate in phlebotomy is available.

  4. Phlebotomy Certificate • The phlebotomy certificate program provides students with the skills necessary to perform skin puncture and venipuncture procedures. Coursework is a combination of lectures and lab experiences on the proper use of laboratory equipment and test codes. Students also gain hands-on experience drawing blood specimens from patients of all ages in a semester-long clinical practicum.

  5. Applicants with little or no prior work experience in the healthcare field must also complete prerequisite courses that address job safety, healthcare system organization and communication skills.

  6. They also learn the medical terminology used for diagnostic procedures and diseases. Applicants with two or more years of healthcare experience may forgo prerequisite requirements. Upon successful completion of this 1-semester program, graduates can find employment as phlebotomists at donor centers, hospitals and doctors' offices.

  7. Coconino Community College's Phlebotomy Training Program • Coconino Community College is located in the northern Arizona city of Flagstaff. Established in 1991, the college now has four main campuses. Phlebotomy training is available through its Public Safety, Law and Allied Health Department.

  8. Phlebotomy Certificate • Graduates of this 32-credit-hour certificate program are prepared to work as phlebotomists in clinics, community health agencies and hospitals. Students are taught how to safely collect blood specimens from patients. They also learn healthcare terminology and laboratory operating procedures.

  9. Required courses include healthcare law, anatomy and physiology, algebra and healthcare communication. A clinical practicum is also required. Students can expect to complete this program in about 1.5 years.
