History of Karate • An Indian monk named Bodhidharma brought a defensive fighting style with basic movements to China. • The Chinese monks intertwined the martial art with their religious practices. • As They moved to different lands, they molded the art into different arts. • An ancient Greece art called Pankration combined wrestling, grappling, and boxing movements. • New arts are continuing to evolve as people refine the movements of other martial art practices.

  6. Jeet Kune Do • Developed by Bruce Lee • Optimizes force and movement in martial arts • Was the first art with great popularity in the U.S.

  7. Taekwan-Do • An extremely ornamental style of martial arts • Uses a wide variety of kicks • Popular and widely used in movies for dramatic effect

  8. Kung Fu • The oldest known martial art of Oriental descent • Created in the Shaolin temples as a form of exercise and defense for the monks • Weapons used in Kung Fu were farm tools in ancient China
