  1. North West Mounted Police • Formed in 1873 • Help keep the Prairies peaceful • Maintain law and order • Help to establish Canadian authority

  2. Effect of the CPR The Canadian Pacific Railway helped bring settlers to the western parts of Canada. This caused a large population increase in those regions.

  3. Marquis wheat • The government was able to create a new type of wheat called Marquis Wheat • It was faster to grow • It could stand up against strong winds • It made excellent bread

  5. Yukon territory • In 1896, gold was discovered in the Klondike region • It was the richest single gold discovery in human history!

  6. Effects on First Nations • The gold seekers damaged the land of the First Nations people • They burned down their forest • The chemicals they used polluted their water • Many died as a result of diseases and starvations
