The National Police Federation and The Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The RCMP members are now facing a new threat involving the ability of the Commissioner, Treasury Board, and the employers to roll back benefits and wages unilaterally without any opposition. In order stop this threat, you need to join a corporation like the National Police Federation that can provide a progressive, fair, and strong collective representation of the police force and can protect your rights as a member.

  2. The National Police Federation and The Royal Canadian Mounted Police The RCMP members are now facing a new threat involving the ability of the Commissioner, Treasury Board, and the employers to roll back benefits and wages unilaterally without any opposition. In order stop this threat, you need to join a corporation like the National Police Federation that can provide a progressive, fair, and strong collective representation of the police force and can protect your rights as a member. The National Police Federation is a non-profit corporation that was incorporated on March 2016 to promote the improvement of the employment conditions of the members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It is one of the two associations that seek to become the certified and only bargaining agent for the police force. The corporation aims not only to become a collective representation for the police force but also to provide a progressive, fair, and strong representation of the entire RCMP as well as to enhance, promote, and protect the rights of all its members.

  3. Is representation really needed? The police officers are well trained to overcome, handle, and engage both the perceived and legitimate threats to the public whom they pledged to protect. At present, the police force is facing a new threat, which involved the ability of the Commissioner, Treasury Board, and the members' employers to roll back benefits and wages unilaterally without any opposition. • Without the presence of an RCMP professional association who can collectively represent and speak on behalf of the members on matters involving the employment terms and conditions like transfers, pay, promotions, member safety, rights, and benefits, these new threats can become a reality.

  4. In order to successfully promote and achieve better working conditions, equipment, and pay as well as to protect the regional, national, contract and federal interests of the police force and its members as well as, there has to be an experienced, knowledgeable, firm, and strong representation to press government. The RCMP is the only police force in Canada that is not yet unionized with no specific group that represents the interests of the organization as well as the future financial stability of the members. Even though the RCMP is considered as a National Police Force in the country, in terms of salary they ranked only number 72 out of 80 Canadian police forces with more than 50 members. Apart from low salary rate, the members are also facing other problems like staff shortage, scarcity of resources, and old equipment.

  5. Why should you choose NPF? • Aside from the National Police Federation, the Mounted Police Professional Association of Canada has also competed to become the national bargaining unit of the RCMP union. However, most of the police force members prefer to join the NPF because they consider it as the most experienced and the strongest corporation in terms of leadership.

  6. One of the advantages of the NPF over the other groups is the depth of understanding that their executive members offer regarding the RCMP labour world, which has been proven by their long years of experience. Each of the three executive members of NPF has more than a decade labour relations experience. Eddie MacDonald, Peter Merrifield, Brian Sauvé have more than 16 years, nearly 13 years, and over 10 years of relations experience respectively. Aside from their highly competent executive members, the corporation is also being headed by 10 board of directors, each of them has served every territory and province for 10 to 35 years. They likewise have an advisory board of professionals and experts in policing, labour relations, and human resources.

  7. Joining the NPF • As a police officer serving and protecting the public, it is only fair for you to be treated with respect and to enjoy the benefits that you deserve like good equipment, fair compensation, and dental and health benefits. Joining the National Police Federation gives you the opportunity to speak out and to send this message to the management of the RCMP.
