  3. The other two candidates… • William Crawford  the South • States’ rights, strict interpretation of const. • John Quincy Adams  New England • Nationwide internal improvements, NO protective tariff

  4. Well this is awkward… • Nobody wins a majority in the Electoral College • Eliminate lowest candidate (Clay) • House of Representatives elects president

  5. The “Corrupt Bargain” • Henry Clay (Speaker of the House) supports John Quincy Adams • Voters are swayed toward Adams • Adams wins, appoints Clay as Sec. of State • Jackson’s supporters cry foul!

  6. The Election of 1828 • John Quincy Adams VS • Andrew Jackson

  7. Birth of “Modern Politics” • Mudslinging campaign • Jackson says Adams is a snob, a gambler, and is untrustworthy

  8. Old Hickory takes the election! • JACKSON WINS!
