  1. Signposts of Fiction What to look for while reading fiction

  2. Contrasts and Contradictions • When a character says or does something that’s opposite of (contradicts) what he has been saying or doing all along • ASK: Why is the character doing that? • Make a prediction or inference about the Plot or Conflict

  3. “Aha” Moment • When a character suddenly realizes, understands, or figures out something • ASK: How might this change things? • If the character discovered a problem, we probably learned the conflict. • If the character understood a life lesson, we probably learned the theme.

  4. Tough Questions • When the character asks himself a really difficult question • ASK: What does this question make me wonder about? • Answers will tell you about the Conflict and might give you clues about what will happen later in the story.
