  2. Introduction • Today, we will be looking at… • Signpost words showing time sequences • Names of various places around the world • Case studies: Australia

  3. Signpost Words • Logical combinations are important in words, sentences and ideas • Example: to signal time relationships • Help you to listen for the main points in a recount (memory) of something that happened

  4. Chronological order to begin with first meanwhile later afterwards finally First / first of all / initially / to start with / the first step / at the first stage Second / secondly / the second step / at the second stage Third / thirdly / the third step / at the third stage Then / after that / next Finally / the final step / at the final stage Examples

  5. Exercise ~ Task 1 • A list of areas where explorers would want to go • Unravel the jumbled words • Put them on the map of the world in the correct places • Match the numbers with the letters on the map • Answers: • 1. The Sahara Desert B • 2. The Amazon River C • 3. The North Pole E • 4. The South Pole D • 5. The Himalayas F • 6. The Gobi Desert A

  6. Points to Note • Important words: stressed • More slowly • More loudly • More carefully • A fast, nuclearand soft sentence: not giving new or important formation • Speakers do not present important information without stressing it

  10. Places around the World • Write the letters A to Z (in a list form) on a piece of paper • You have 5-10 minutes to try and find the name of a country for each letter of the alphabet • e.g. A for Albania, B for Belgium, C for China etc
