  2. The Selection Test (11+) What is the 11+? “ The 11+ is a test given to pupils in their last year of primary school and is used as a means to determine whether that pupil is suited to the academic rigours of a grammar school education. “ Date: Saturday 20th September 2014

Grammar Schools In Southend Where could my child go if they passed the 11+? • Southend High School for Boys Southend-on-Sea • Southend High School for Girls Southend-on-Sea • Westcliff High School for Boys Westcliff-on-Sea • Westcliff High School for Girls Westcliff-on-Sea These schools also have Grammar Streams: • Cecil Jones College • St Bernard’s High School and Arts College • Shoeburyness High School • St Thomas More High School

  4. Registering to take the 11+ selection test • 1)  Application forms available from CSSE or collected at open evenings for grammar schools • 2) Must register by Friday 5th September • 3) Results are issued on Monday 13th October • 4) Application forms completed by 29th October • 5) Open evenings for grammar schools will be in summer term (Dates to be confirmed)

  5. Is my child suited to a grammar school? • Level 3 at KS 1 in Maths and Reading • Currently working at level 4 or 5 Enjoys academic subjects and puzzles, challenges Hard working and committed Can work under pressure

  6. The Selection Test(11+) • What does the selection test involve? • English test – 1 hour 10 mins Reading - 10 minutes Reading comprehension – 40 minutes Applied reasoning – 10 minutes Writing – 20 minutes • Maths test – 1 hour

  7. English Passage requiring a high level of reading from an unfamiliar text Questions about the text – mainly multiple choice Meanings of words/phrases Word puzzles e.g. Missing letters, words within words Writing – 2 short descriptions – demonstrate high level of spelling, grammar and punctuation

  8. Maths Range of questions - calculations and using and applying. Level 5+ questions • Basic algebra • Angles • Reading of graphs and charts
