  2. Setting the scene The aim of this session is to show: How easy it is for any of us to obtain information about others from the internet. AND How to stop others finding out about you!

  3. When do we give information to others? • Online shopping • eBay • Entering competitions • Social networks • Email • Searching the net • Spyware/Adware/Phishing • Book a holiday • Search for Insurance ……..and any other activity where you say ANYTHING about yourself or your interests

  4. Social Networking • Examples include: Bebo, Facebook, Myspace, Habo Hotel, Second Life, Gypsii. • Used by millions of people around the world each day • Millions of Photos are uploaded and shared each day

  5. Social Networks Provide various ways to interact, including: • Chat • Video • Voice chat • File sharing • Blogging • Discussion • May allow your alter ego loose as an avatar

  11. What do we know now? • Last Name • Parents & Brothers names • Friends • School (inc. youth club – when/where) • Hobbies (Swimming – when/where) • Address & phone number • Where she is likely to be at a weekend • Probable route home from school • And a selection of other information

  12. How can we reduce the risks? • Onlyenter non-sensitive information about yourself. • Only give information you have to • Check the settings: • Make sure you’re not sharing your profile with all other people • Restrict access to any pictures or files you post.

  13. How can we reduce the risks? • Secure Photos to stop them being copied by those you don’t know • Be wary of people you have not met in real life (do you know who they really are?) • Remember: anything posted is visible to other people at any time!

  14. Keeping it Private All social networking sites have different settings. Make sure you know how to set your photos and personal information private and only visible to those you want to be able to see it.
