LBT Q4 2007 Engineering Review

INSP: Instrument Support. LBT Q4 2007 Engineering Review. Highlights (Q4/2007). Completed alignment of Blue Hub, verified good alignment of Red Hub. Determined that co-pointing of both hubs was possible within range of active optics from Zenith to 30 degrees El at least.

  2. Highlights (Q4/2007) Completed alignment of Blue Hub, verified good alignment of Red Hub. Determined that co-pointing of both hubs was possible within range of active optics from Zenith to 30 degrees El at least. Power for Lucifer and LINC Helium Compressors Added to 4th Floor

  3. Open Issues Have not as yet determined stray light reduction from Italian’s teflon washer baffles. Have not as yet obtained Blue Superfoc images to confirm final alignment adjustment. Have not yet optimized co-pointing to maximize range of adjustments for available to active optics.

  4. Progress • Alignment of Blue hub proceeded through Q4, with images with 0.5” FWHM obtained in December. The alignment iterations followed the model predictions very closely. A final adjustment has been made but the results have not yet been measured from that, it should improve image quality again past that present when the 0.5” images were taken. • Red hub tilt to optical axis determined to be < 2’, and therefore degradation in image quality due to Red hub misalignment ~ 80% EE on 2 pixel diameter. While this is good enough, at some stage will try to take out all observable misalignment. • Issue of focal plane curvature in Red hub determined to be related to imperfect positioning of L2. Focal plane curvature actually useful diagnostic for optimizing position of L2. Italian optical design did not take into account variable Z11, improvements over optical design possible now.

  5. Planning • Measurement of stray light needs to be done. • New superfoc images in Blue need to be taken to confirm good alignment. • Further work optimizing alignment for co-pointing required.

  6. 4th Floor Helium Compressors
