  1. Upcoming Services and Systems Aspectsfor 3GPP2:3GPP2 Future Directions and IMT-Advanced WorkshopOsaka, Japan Norikazu - Nick Yamasaki KDDI Corporation Chair, TSG-S

  2. Outline of Presentation • Overview of Services and System Aspects • Services/Systems Aspects Work Items • Current Projects • Looking Forward & Concluding Remarks • Back-up Slides: Achievements

  3. Overview of Services and Systems Aspects (1/4) • The Services and Systems Aspects TSG (TSG-S) is responsible for the development of service capability requirements for systems based on 3GPP2 specifications. It is also responsible for high level architectural issues, as required, to coordinate service development across the various TSGs. In this role, the Services and Systems TSG shall track the activities within the various TSGs, as required, to meet the above service requirements.

  4. Overview of Services and Systems Aspects (2/4) • Specifically, it has a responsibility for: • Define services, network management and system requirements to support regional and international 3rd Generation and beyond market needs; • Develop network architecture and associated system requirements and reference models; • Develop security architecture and associated security requirements and reference models; • Track services, network management and features development activities across TSGs; • Coordinate inter-TSG technical activities; • Manage work items placed under its responsibility; • Validate and verify specification text it develops.

  5. Overview of Service and Systems Aspects (3/4) • More specifically, TSG-S addresses the following areas of work: • Develop 3GPP2 System Requirements Guide; • Develop 3GPP2 Work Plan; • Define Stage 1 services and features requirements; • Develop high-level functionality descriptions for system services and capabilities; • Manage, coordinate, as well as develop architectural and requirements associated with all end-to-end features, services and system capabilities including, but not limited to, security and QoS;

  6. Overview of Service and Systems Aspects (4/4) • More specifically, TSG-S addresses the following areas of work (continued): • Develop requirements for international roaming; • Develop 3GPP2 OAM&P across all TSGs including: • 1) Stage 1 high-level requirements and • 2) Stage 2 and Stage 3 for the interface between network management system and element management functions; • Coordinate at a high level the technical work performed in other TSGs and monitor 3GPP2 work plan progress; • Coordinate to resolve technical discrepancies between the works undertaken by other TSGs.

  7. Services/Systems Aspects Work Items

  8. Current TSG-S Projects

  9. Going Forward • Work Item and Requirements Development Process is described in SC.R1003 • Established in 2004, this processes proved to be effective after some fine-tuning • Allows requirements development with buy-in and participation from TSGs and other stake-holders • TSG review, comment resolution, V&V • Process is smooth, allows flexibility in review/V&V • Stage 1 publications have proliferated since SC.R1003 publication • May want to consider workshops for future major initiatives, or mini-workshops within super-meetings • Femto Cell Requirements development process proved effective, can serve as a model • Workshop in Boston in October 2007 allowed internal and external expertise to guide requirements development process

  10. Concluding Remarks • Actual Projects are driven by WI process • May be a good time to publish a new release of 3GPP2 Vision document • Most recent Vision document SC.R5001 published in 2004 • Continue the work on topics such as Security for Femto Systems, Inter-technology interworking • IMT-Advanced • This ITU initiative is in the requirements setting stage • TSG-S has initiated discussion on related requirements • Telecommunication technologies, and in particular wireless, are moving ever faster • Our streamlined requirements processes are well suited for fast response to the market needs
