  4. FIELDS Overview Main Electronics Package includes: • Thermal Noise Receiver / High Frequency Receiver (TNR/HFR) - LESIA • Time Domain Sampler (TDS) - UMinn • Digital Fields Board (DFB) - LASP • Antenna Electronics Board (AEB) – UCB • MAG Electronics (MAG) – GSFC • Instrument Control Unit (ICU) – UCB • Low Noise Power Supply (LNPS) - UMinn E-Field Antennas 2.3 m Tip-to-Hinge Preamps located at Hinge Main Electronics Package (MEP) MagBoom MAG (Inboard) MAG (Outboard) SCM

  5. FIELDs Organization

  6. FIELDs Technical Status • Antenna Technology Development • Basic Concept Complete • Materials Tests in progress @GRC • Niobium C-103 • Tantalum-Tungsten Ta-W • Thermal Modeling • Expected 10/15/12 • Will need Preamp details soon • Thermal Test Model • Design in progress • Fabrication expect by end of year • PROMES tests in Winter 2013 • Deployment Brake • Prototype #1 Complete • Prototype #2 in fab

  7. FIELDS Technical Status • Main Electronics Package Development • Basic Interface Concept with Spacecraft Complete • Internal Electrical Concept Complete • Working on Box Mechanical Specifications • Basic Concept Uses Board Slices (similar to MAVEN) • Board Size Must be Common Among all Boards • FIELDS boards have THEMIS, MAVEN and STEREO heritage • Mass Estimate Used THEMIS-sized Boards (6”x9”) • AEB (THEMIS) no issue • ICU (MAVEN) adding memory but will fit in 6x9” format. • DFB (THEMIS) has to add circuitry and needs smaller A/D’s to fit. The smaller A/Ds need radiation testing (in the works at LASP). • MAG (MAVEN) is requesting a separate slice for heater circuits and more filtering than on MAVEN. Would prefer MAVEN footprint. • Digital Spectrometer would be a single slice, replacing HFR-TNR. There is a group working on these specifications.

  8. FIELDS Schedule • Electric Field Antennae Schedule • Materials • Materials testing at GRC has shown mass increases in the samples • Concern that oxidation will change optical properties, we have repeated tests with “O2 getters” These did not solve the problem. • Added a second candidate material Ta-W to test • Thermal Test Model (at PROMES) • Thermal modeling showed initial concept of TTM would not fully demonstrate the design. Revised TMM design in progress, fabrication by year end. • Next PROMES opportunity is Winter 2013 (not Sept 2012)

  9. FIELDS Schedule • Main Electronics Package Schedule • Very high-level schedule of MEP effort currently in master schedule • Details to be linked in as the detailed specification is finished (i.e. Will the board size, shape, connectors change, etc?) • ICU design will have priority as other board designers will need “ICU simulators” for their test apparatus. • ICU test will require S/C simulator (GSEOS) as in RBSP. • FIELDs ICD will be needed for S/C simulator. • (LNPS, TDS, and DFB have nearly the same schedules at this point.)

  10. FIELDS Schedule • MAG Schedule • Supported MAG-SCM tests • Final report just delivered last week • GSFC has demonstrated 256 samples/sec operation • Designed non-magnetic TV chamber for sensor life tests • Considering materials changes in sensor

  11. FIELDS Schedule • SCM Schedule • Supported MAG-SCM compatibility tests • Built / Tested dual gain model with acceptable results for SPP • Developed SCM specification

  12. FIELDS Risk Summary F14 - Phase B Schedule Risk has been retired. This risk turned into reality as the APL-to-UCB contract took until the end of the funded period and UCB watched all its subcontracts fall out of contract. According to our Sponsored Projects Office, No-Cost-Extensions were offered to all subcontractors. We expect to get back on schedule in the coming period. F3 - Foreign Funding (commitment): Continuing as our top risk, we are expecting to hear more next month from our French colleagues about possible technical working arrangements for a joint project.

  13. FIELDS Cost

  14. Subcontracts All Subcontracts are currently on No-Cost Extensions APL-UCB contract modifications have historically occurred too late for UCB to keep subcontractors continuously funded.

  15. FIELDS Issues & Concerns • Technical • HFR/TNR funding issues. Replacement with UCB-Digital Receiver • Continuing EMC program (needed for final specification) • Vector Electric Field Fidelity (with S/C Electrostatics) • Cost • No Issues • Schedule • Fall 2012 Manpower issues. RBSP launch, CINEMA launch, FOXSI launch and MAVEN delivery has depleted engineering and management resources.
