  1. Planetary Protection Tutorial Focused on the Instrument Developers • Karen Buxbaum, MPO Planetary Protection Manager • Overview of planetary protection concept and basics (about 45 minutes) • Bob Bartlett, MAVEN Planetary Protection Lead • Approach that MAVEN is taking to Planetary Protection (based on approved protection plan) (about 30 minutes) • Mark Johnson, LM Breakup and Burnup analysis lead • Breakup and burnup analysis and expectations of what will come out of it as it relates to the instruments (should have MAVEN results using MRO analysis) (about 45 minutes) • Amy Baker, Consultant, Technical Administrative Services, Designing for Planetary Protection Compliance (about 1 hour) • Clean room and assembly ops — what are the “catalog” values of spore count that can be assumed for different assumptions, what are the clean room practices from the teams, and is it likely that we will change them? • Assays — how are they used in the overall planetary protection implementation, what are the implications for how the instrument teams work, and in practice how/who will conduct them? • Bio-reduction via the various mitigation techniques (e.g., DHMR) • How to keep the instruments clean on the spacecraft and on the launch pad
