  2. Why Set Goals? • Motivate students • Encourage students to be responsible for their own learning • Help you monitor progress • Keep students focused

  3. Types of Goals • Number of objectives mastered • Average Practice % correct • Average Regular Test % correct • Other goals

  4. Objectives Mastered Guidelines • Grades 1 and 2: 2 objectives per week • Grades 3 and up: 4 objectives per week

  5. Percent Correct Guidelines • Set Average Percent Correct • On Practice at 75% (or higher) • On Regular Tests at 85% (or higher) • Enter goals so Accelerated Math can track student progress for you

  6. Other Goals • Behavior • Time on task • Following routines • Organization • Help students remain committed to goals

  7. Set Goals Together • Involve each student to encourage ownership • Meet with each student individually: • Present your proposed goal • Discuss • Show support and build confidence • Complete the Student Math Plan together

  8. TOPS Report for Monitoring Progress • Teach students to view Overall Progress section to monitor goal progress on a daily basis • Look for: • Total Objectives Mastered • Practice Average Percent Correct • Test Average Percent Correct

  10. Adjust Goals if Needed • Adjust goals during marking period if current goals are: • Too ambitious: Student is lagging behind and discouraged • Too easy: Student is exceeding goals and is bored • Consider circumstances outside of class that may affect progress

  11. Grades Based on Goals • Grading is a school or district decision • Consider using completion of goals as part of the math grade • Use the Goal History Report • Did the student reach his goals?

  12. Create Ideas for Motivating Students • Goals are just one way to motivate • Success is the greatest motivator • Students feel successful when they practice math at the appropriate level • Immediate feedback from you and Accelerated Math provide the best student motivation
