  2. The First Estate: Religious Clergy • Less than 1% of the population • Enjoyed great wealth and privilege • Collected tithes • Paid no taxes to the government

  3. The Second Estate: Nobility • Less than 2% of the population • Received top jobs in government, military, courts, and even the church • Responsible for providing protection

  9. Peasants and serfs • Made up roughly 90% of the total population • Worked to provide for the first two estates • Also paid high taxes to support the first two estates • Technically free, but serfs/peasants were bound to the land
