  2. Rogaining maps • Map standards considerably less advanced compared to orienteering maps • IRF standards for championship rogaines • scale 1:25000 – 1:50000 • contour interval ≤ 20 m • magnetic north lines • at least four color printing

Rogaining maps in Estonia • More detailed compared to the Estonian base map • More generalised compared to orienteering maps • Estonian rogaining map style • simplified o-map • scale 1:30000 – 1:50000 • contour interval 5 m • beyond rogaining events, rogaining maps have been used at adventure races and as a base map for drawing MTBO maps

  4. Two methods for preparing the base map for field work • Taking the Estonian base map as the basis, adding information from o-maps, ortophotos and other sources • Taking o-maps as the basis, deleting unneccesary information • Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages

Rogaining map symbols • Runnability of forest and open areas not indicated • No intermediate contour lines or index contours • Major, high voltage power lines indicated • Single objects depending on terrain • buildings, ruins • towers • significant boulder clusters • single large boulders with height over 2 m • major fodder racks

Field work for rogaining maps • Changes to the situation • new clearings • new building • missing roads, tracks, ditches etc • Checking and correcting the road/track/path classes • Correcting contours • in particular outside areas covered by o-maps • Unifying the level of generalisation • Out-of-bound areas • Negotiations with land owners

Amount of time spent • Depends on the quality of base map • 1 km² of rogaining map • about 1 hour of field work • about 1 hour map drawing with OCAD • + 5-30 minutes with each land owner • Amount of time per km² rather small compared to o-maps, but the area is large • for 24 hour rogaine about 250 km² or 500 hours • for 8 hour rogaine over 80 km² or 160 hours
