  2. PREPOSITION • Word that relates a noun or a pronoun that appears with it to another word in the sentence • Usually just one word • Can sometimes be made up of two or three words

  3. CONJUNCTIONS • Word used to connect other words or groups of words in a sentences • Three types • Coordinating • Correlating • subordinating

  4. COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS • Connect similar kinds of words or similar groups of words • FANBOYS • For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so • Example • My sister and brother watched the movie. • They wrote a short yet effective story. • Bob left early, so I left with him.

CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS • Connect similar words or groups of words, but appear in pairs • Both…and • Neither….nor • Whether….or • Either….or • Not only….but also • Example • He watched both lions and tigers • Neither Don nor she will go • Jean recycled bottles and cans not only consistently but also carefully

SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS • Connect two complete ideas by making one of the ideas subordinate (rank below in importance) to the other • Common subordinating conjunctions • After, although, as, as if, as long as, as soon as, because, before, even though, if, in order that, since, so that, than, though, unless, until, while • Example • We protect wetlands because they are important. • As soon as the volunteers arrived, the cleanup work began.

INTERJECTIONS • Word that expresses feeling or emotion • Functions independently in the sentence • Common interjections • Aha, bravo, goodness, great, hurray, oh, oops, well, ugh, whew, ouch • Use punctuation after • Usually a comma, exclamation point • Example • Wow! What an amazing dress. • Ouch! I hurt my toe!
