In the village project aims at activating inhabitants from rural areas, at village level and improving their wellbeing Operational objectives and activities Support of the village development by going through the whole process at the village level and encouraging emergence of ideas in the case they are not starting yet Advance the development work according to the long term development plans Assuring that 80% of Kainuu villages have up-dated village plan Support village internationalisation Support the exchange of experience, communication and networking between villages Achieve a permanent communication between village and municipality, which allows that municipality supports villages’ project activity Projects (2/6)Rural Development & Research Workgroup

  11. Projects (3/6)Historical & Cultural Research Workgroup The research is related to the history and culture of Kainuu and Archangel Karelia. The current research is now conducted with respect to the old cultural routes between Gulf of Bothnia and White Sea. Data collection consists of archive research, research of the written sources, as well as fieldwork in Kainuu, in the border villages, conducting interviews and visually documenting by taking pictures.

Kainuu Bioenery Programme 2006-2010 The present condition of bioenergy use, bioenergy potential and the ideas of local bioenergy actors are now combined into a programme for promoting the production and use of renewable energies in Kainuu. The preparation of the programme has been financed by the local Employment and Economic Development Centre and Kainuun Etu Oy. The use of renewable energy resource and the strengthening of bioenergy cluster in Kainuu are set as the general targets of the programme. Projects (4/6) Bio-energy Development & Research

Projects (5/6)International Research projects Insular Labour Markets (2004-2006), NORDREGIO co-ordinated research • Nordic comparative project with six case studies: Bornholm, Gotland, Iceland (Akureyri and Eyjafjörður region), Ulstein, Kainuu and Åland. Methodology: • Analysis of statistical indicators, especially the ones related to population transition, focusing on labour market and migration in the case study region • Qualitative survey: 12 interviews type life-story; purpose of interviews: to cover a large spectrum of situations in which transition/job changes occurred and to identify the role of formal and informal networks in finding a job; it is assumed that in a isolated region, being it island or remote, the local informal networks play a crucial role in identifying niches on the local labour market; it is also interesting to see how alternative means of subsistence were used (unemployment, education etc). • Questionnaire survey on companies: 20/30 questionnaires addressed to specific types of enterprises; • Reporting: based on a given structure, the each caste study region labour markets is portrayed
