What is the Internet? • The term ‘internet’ is short for internetwork. • A network is a collection of computers that can share files, resources, and information. • Networks can greatly reduce cost. • The world’s largest network, is the internet, which means, INTER-NETWORK, or between networks (joining networks together) • To join the Internet, your PC needs an IP Address.

Connecting to the Internet • To connect to the internet, you will probably use an internet browser • An internet browser is software on your computer that navigates the internet for you. • Some internet browsers have built in search engines from a trusted provider. • Search engines scan the internet for information, so you don’t have to!

Why use the Internet? • Because networks provide means of a more efficient method of communication and file sharing, almost all corporations and schools now operate on a network. • For example, each user on a network may have their own dedicated place on a network for sharing, accessing, or creating files. • The internet enables collaboration on a large scale, including web mail, email, information, and web pages.

Internet Browsers • There are many internet browsers out there. • Some are more popular than others, and some are more standardized than others. • A standard internet browser is a browser that has become widely accepted for use in all industries, and is easily available on a computer or OS. • An alternate browser is a browser that can be used by the user, but not as widely accepted or does not come pre-installed.

  6. The most common/popular Browsers • Standard Browsers • Internet Explorer (PC) • Safari (MacIntosh) • Alternative Browsers • Mozilla Firefox • Google Chrome • Opera And of course, there are many more!

Use of internet browsers • Certain trends appear with certain internet browsers. • A browser may gain or lose popularity over a period of time. • Because Windows is the most widely accepted operating system in the business world, Internet Explorer remains the “business browser” while other users might choose a browser like Firefox or Chrome instead.

  8. In this Guide • In this guide, we will discuss and review how to set up the three most popular internet browsers available: • Internet Explorer (V. 8, 10, 11) • Mozilla Firefox • Google Chrome

Setup • Apart from personalization, Internet Explorer (referred to as IE or MSIE) and Mozilla Firefox are pretty much ready to use upon installation or opening of the software. • Google Chrome needs a little manipulation before its settings match those of IE and Firefox, but they are also quick and easy.

Internet Explorer versions • Internet Explorer has changed over the years, and today, many people have a wide variety of versions, ranging from Version 6, released in 2001, to Version 11, released in 2013. • We will cover versions 8, 10 and 11 in this tutorial, although 9 is pretty similar to 10.

Chrome versions • Google releases mandatory updates for Chrome rather than releasing an entirely new internet browser. • Updates are mandatory, and installed automatically, so all software is always up to date. • Google releases new versions every few weeks, and has more version cycles than Internet Explorer or Firefox.

  12. Firefox versions • Firefox is sort of in-between Internet Explorer and Chrome, in terms of release cycle habits.

  21. Internet Explorer 11 Setup • Open Internet Explorer. If you don’t know how, click Start and then type ‘internet explorer’. Click ‘Internet Explorer’. • The homepage for Internet Explorer will open. • To change the homepage, click ‘Tools.’

  23. Internet Explorer 11 Setup 7. Make sure this box below IS NOT checked. 8. Make sure the Menu bar is enabled. Right click on your window and make sure Menu bar is checked. 9. You’re done! Internet Explorer’s settings are already preset for you, so you don’t need to do much.

  24. Google Chrome Setup • Before we begin, we have to understand that Google Chrome is an alternate browser, and that its primary purpose is to be a personalized browser. Unlike Internet Explorer, the user can customize it to their liking much more. • Because of this, Chrome’s default settings are NOT compliant or recommended, and must be altered before you can use it.

  26. Google Chrome Setup 5. In the ‘On Startup’ section, selected ‘Open a specific page or set of pages’. Type in the name of the page you want to open on startup (home page.) 6. Make sure all boxes under Appearance are checked.

  27. Google Chrome Setup 7. Select your preferred search engine in the ‘Search’ box. 8. If you choose, you can make Chrome your default browser. However, your organization or system administrator might have restricted this option.

  28. Google Chrome Setup 9. Click ‘Show advanced settings…’ at the bottom. 10. IMPORTANT: Make sure the box under the Downloads section IS checked. Select Change to select your default downloads location. For the purpose of this tutorial, I have changed mine back to default for privacy purposes.

  29. Google Chrome Setup 11. Next, click HELP. 12. Make sure your browser is up to date. 13. You’re done! As you can see, Chrome setup is a little more complex than IE setup, but its worth it!

  30. Mozilla Firefox Setup • We will use Mozilla Firefox 9.0.1 for this tutorial.

  31. Firefox Setup • Firefox 9.0.1 requires very little set up. • Firefox is another alternative browser, and is open-source and funded and created by Mozilla.
