  2. A Real World Application • The Arizona Cardinals football organization uses a plethora of computers, software, and hardware to display their digital video and graphics on the one of the newest videoboards in the NFL.

  3. How’d they do that? • Have you ever been to a game and wondered “How did they do that?” • From content creation to the actual display of video and graphics, a multitude of computers and software are involved. • What software, hardware, and operating systems are used?

  4. Quick Facts • Each home game is a sell-out crowd. There are over 63,000 seats in University of Phoenix Stadium. • University of Phoenix Stadium boasts a 27’ X 96’ video board in the south end zone and a smaller 22’ X 40’ in the north end zone. • On October 16, 2006 the Arizona Cardinals hosted their first Monday Night Football game in University of Phoenix Stadium. Over 14 million viewers tuned in.

  5. Creation of Content • Software Used • Adobe Photoshop • Adobe After Effects 7.0 • Final Cut Pro • Hardware Used • Mac G5 with AJA video card that uses SDI (Serial Digital Interface) • A quad processor -- two dual-core 2.5GHz PowerPC G5 processors • Dual 24” high resolution monitors

  6. Creation of Content Continued • Hundreds of graphics have been made in Adobe Photoshop. These graphics include: Player Bios, Game and Player Stats, as well as Sponsored Displays. • 5-10 video elements are produced for each home game using Apple’s Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects.

  7. Videoboard Operation • Once content has been created, it is then loaded or routed through a series of hardware and software. • To control the two LED video displays and fascia (ribbon) boards, it takes 7 PCs and 6 video/signal converters as well as proprietary software to get the job done. • V-Link software and hardware allows us to change aspect ratios of a video source from 4:3 to 16:9, and vice versa.

  8. Videoboard Operations Continued • Once the content has been loaded into the proper computers, it then has to be programmed for display. • While we do display a lot of graphic content, most of what you would see on gameday is live video and replays. • Display programming and scripting are required to size the video and graphics to the appropriate dimensions as well as send the digital signal to the board.

  9. The Videoboards • The south end zone video board is the largest in the state of Arizona. • Pixel size: • South: 352 X 1280 • North: 288 X 528 • Ribbons: 40 X 4000 • The north and south end zone boards are capable of displaying up to 4.3 trillion colors.

  10. Quick Facts 2 • It takes a team of 7 people to create and program the videoboards alone. • 3 Macs and 7 Windows based computers are used to design and operate the videoboards. • Besides the videoboard crew, there are over 35 people involved (cameramen, engineers, producers, and directors) to provide you, the fan, with the “ultimate” game day entertainment and experience.

  11. Computer Integration Undoubtedly, without the use of computer integration the videoboard displays used by the Arizona Cardinals would be impossible. The graphic content as well as the quality of the video certainly wouldn’t be the same. As computer technology continues to advance, so does its modern day application. The Arizona Cardinals look forward to the changes in technology and the improvement it will provide in the overall game day experience and entertainment for you the fans.
