  2. The POMF conducts extensive research to ensure that every Texas officer killed in the line of duty is documented and given recognition on the Memorial.

  4. Sergeant John Maki Celeste Police Department February 10, 2004 Sergeant Maki was killed in an automobile accident while en route to assist an ongoing investigation.

  5. Deputy Constable Frank Claborn Harris County Constable – Pct 4 February 19, 2004 Deputy Claborn, an 18 year veteran, was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind by a drunk driver.

  6. Police Officer John Logan Huntington Police Department March 14, 2004 Officer Logan died from gunshot wounds sustained while making a traffic stop.

  7. Police Officer Frank Cantu Houston Police Department March 25, 2004 19 year veteran Police Officer Frank Cantu was killed when his patrol car was struck by a drunk driver.

  8. Trooper Kurt Knapp Texas Department of Public Safety May 8, 2004 Trooper Knapp was killed when he lost control of his patrol car and struck another vehicle.

  9. Police Officer Darren Medlin Grapevine Police Department June 12, 2004 Officer Medlin was conducting a traffic stop when he was struck and killed by drunk driver.

  10. Sergeant Gregory Hunter Grand Prairie Police Department June 18, 2004 Sergeant Hunter, a 29 year veteran, was shot and killed while he and another officer investigated a suspicious vehicle at a local store.

  11. Police Officer Nathan Laurie River Oaks Police Department July 29, 2004 Officer Laurie was killed in an automobile accident during a vehicle pursuit.

  12. Police Officer Angel Barcena El Paso Police Department September 25, 2004 Officer Barcena was shot and killed when he and his field training officer responded to a domestic disturbance call.

  13. Police Officer Christopher Sobieski Prairie View Police Department September 26, 2004 Officer Sobieski was killed when his patrol car exploded after being struck from behind by a suspected drunk driver.

  14. Deputy Sheriff Dirk Knearem Chambers County Sheriff’s Dept. October 17, 2004 Deputy Knearem, a 16 year veteran, was killed in an automobile accident.

  15. Lieutenant Robert Haley Comanche County Sheriff’s Dept. October 28, 2004 Lieutenant Haley was killed in an automobile accident while transporting an inmate from Abilene to Comanche.

  16. Sergeant Mike Lane Beaumont Police Department September 15, 2004 Sergeant Lane, a 32 year veteran, was killed when the department helicopter he was riding in crashed into Sabine Lake.

  17. Police Officer Amy Lynn Donovan Austin Police Department October 31, 2004 Officer Donovan was killed when she was accidentally struck by a police cruiser during a foot chase.

  18. Patrol Officer Lloyd Rogers Castleberry ISD Police Dept. January 18, 2005 Officer Rogers suffered a fatal heart attack shortly after breaking up a fight between two juveniles.

  19. Police Officer Eric Van Fossan Eagle Pass Police Department February 26, 2005 Officer Van Fossan suffered a fatal heart attack after he and other officers struggled with a suspect at the scene of a domestic disturbance.

  20. Deputy Sheriff Andy Taylor Llano County Sheriff’s Office May 9, 2005 Deputy Taylor was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop.

  21. Reserve Deputy Nehemiah Pickens Harris County Constable – Pct 6 July 5, 2005 Reserve Constable Pickens was shot and killed by a Harris County Sheriff's deputy when he was mistaken for an armed subject during a foot pursuit.

  22. Deputy Sheriff Michael Bancroft Robertson County Sheriff’s Dept. August 23, 2005 Deputy Bancroft was killed in an automobile accident while returning after serving several warrants in Waco.

  23. Sergeant Denny Gallaway San Jacinto County Constable Pct 2 September 15, 2005 Sergeant Gallaway drowned while attempting to rescue a man from the Trinity River.

  24. Sergeant Ruben Orozco El Paso County Sheriff’s Dept. September 17, 2005 Sergeant Orozco, a 26 year veteran, was killed when a wheel from a pickup truck flew across the median and struck his car.

  25. Police Officer John Wheeler San Antonio Department October 14, 2005 Officer Wheeler, a 12 year veteran, was killed when his patrol car was struck from behind by a car going over 90 mph hour.

  26. Twenty-two officers have given their lives in the line of duty from January 1, 2004 through October 31, 2005.
