  2. Romans 12:3 • For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

  3. Romans 12:4 The one body is the local NT church—the universal body of Christ does not have offices. • For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

  5. Types of Pride • He takes pride in his work. • I am really proud of you [or them]. • That is one arrogant person. • Haughty • Conceited • having an excessively high opinion of oneself

  6. Two Common Errors Remember—the conceited person doesn’t think they are thinking too highly of themselves. Self-Evaluation To think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think.

  7. Serious Problem • God Opposes the Proud • God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. • James 4:6 • be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. • 1 Peter 5:5

  8. Application Let’s admit that pride is that sin that I can see the speck [of pride] in my brother’s eye but can’t see the log [of pride] in my own eye.

  9. Ways to Combat Pride Recognize that pride, conceit, and arrogance in my life is SiN. We are commanded not to be proud.

  11. 2 Timothy 3:2-4 • lovers of self • proud • arrogant • swollen with conceit

  12. Romans 12:16 • Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, • but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

  13. James 4:10 In the Imperative • Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.

  14. Application Do things out of the norm that show you don’t think too highly of yourself.

  16. Proverbs 16:18 • Pride goes before destruction, • And a haughty [arrogant] spirit before a fall.

Ways to Combat Pride • Recognize that pride, conceit, arrogance in my life is a SIN. • Understand that IT is foolish to be filled with conceit. • Get a good understanding on what the Bible means by GRACE. • See self-conceit for what it is—a boasting in self that takes away from the glory of God. • Redirect praise but don’t be a fake • Don’t minimize what people say

  30. Two Common Errors Self-Evaluation • To think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think. • To think of ourselves lower than we ought to think. • This would be a self-worth that does NOT consider the gifts, talents and abilities God has granted the believer in Christ Jesus

  32. Soberly This is where I get NOT too high or NOT too low • Earnest, thoughtful character • marked by temperance, moderation, or seriousness • sensible • showing no excessive or extreme qualities

  33. Question What does the text say is the governor to keep my thinking NOT too high or too low?

  35. Sovereign Grace and Faith keep it from being too high and likewise too low.

  36. Question What is the issue with TOO low?

  37. Wrapping it Up My over or under assessment of myself impacts others. Romans 12:4-5 • For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: • So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

  38. Wrapping it Up Pride is when sinful human beings aspire to the status and position of God and refuse to acknowledge their dependence upon Him.
