  2. An animal with a backbone is called a vertebrate. • A bird is a vertebrate. • A human is a vertebrate.

  3. Vertebrates are classified by how they control their body temperature. • Cold blooded vertebrates (fish, amphibians, and reptiles) get heat from outside the body. • Warm blooded vertebrates (birds and mammals) use energy from food to keep body temperature constant.

  4. An animal without a backbone is called an invertebrate. • A worm is an invertebrate. • An octopus is an invertebrate.

  5. Cnidarians are invertebrates that have poison stingers on tentacles. • Three types of cnidarians are • Hydra • Jellyfish • Seaanemones

  6. Mollusks are soft bodied invertebrates. • Examples of mollusks are • Snails • Clams • Oysters • squids

  7. Echinoderms are spiny skinned invertebrates. • Echinoderms are identified by • A star design • Spiny skin • An internal supporting structure called an endoskeleton.

  8. Arthropods make up the largest invertebrate group. • Arthropods are identified by a hard skeleton on the outside of their bodies called an exoskeleton. • Examples are Arachnids • Centipedesandmillipedes • Crustaceans • Insects
