  4. Some Reasons to go to College • You’ll have fun. • You study topics that interest you. • You’ll become well rounded. • You’ll make great new friends. • College helps develop social skills. • The jobs you get will be more interesting • You’ll make more money.

  5. Why get educated?

  6. What Does It Take? • Good grades • Good test scores (SAT) • Good work habits • Perseverance • Varied experiences: sports/clubs/drama/music/art/etc…

  7. How do I get good grades? • Do your best every day • Stay organized- use the calendar • Study for tests – use your notes. • Don’t get ANY ZEROS! • Check Aeries at least once/week • Make up ALL missed assignment or low test scores

  8. The Problem With Zeros • Student 1: 100, 60, 75, 80, 95 = ? • 82% or a B • Student 2: 100, 0, 75, 80, 95 = ? • 70% or a C- • Student 3: 100, 0, 0, 90, 95 = ? • 57% or an F

  9. What if I’m struggling? • Tell your teacher, get help! • Talk to your parents • Go see a counselor • Come see me or Mr. Morgan • We’ll help you succeed if you let us know!

  10. Promotion Policy All three trimester report cards count A student who fails more than one class for the year will not promote to high school A student may make up an F grade by completing a “course recovery” program Bottom line…DON’T FAIL A CLASS!

Our Academic Focus This Year… The Common Core Standards • Language Arts • Reading Closely and Critically • Summarizing supporting details from text • Focus on Informative / Argumentative / Narrative Writing • Justifying your ideas using evidence from the reading or other sources • Higher Order Thinking!

General Behavior • We want to provide you the best education in a place where you want to come every day. • If one person gets in the way of another person getting this, there are consequences • Potential Consequences • Warning Slips - Work Detail • Office Referrals - LD’s, ISD’s, ASD’s, ADIS’s - Restricted Activities - Suspensions/Expulsions

Warning SlipsUsed for minor violations • No Excuse Violations • Teasing/Putdowns • Harassment • Profanity • Inappropriate Dress • PDA • Violations • Gossip • Throwing objects • Physical Contact • Horseplay (hands off!) • Gum chewing • Cutting in line • Littering Will result in a call down to the office. Future offenses will result in a referral + consequence. 3 Warnings for an offense = referral + consequence.

Referrals: Used for major infractions Will always include a consequence • Physical Aggression • Bullying/Harassment/ Threat • Cheating/Plagiarism • Truancy/Cutting • Profanity • Sexual Harassment • Ethnic/Racial/Religious Harassment • Vandalism/Theft • Defiance of Rules/Authority • Disruption • Excessive Tardies • 3 gum warnings • Cell Phone/Personal Electronics • Academic Dishonesty 3 referrals = restricted activities

  19. In-School Detention • If you are not behaving appropriately in class • Sent there for the rest of the period • Also serve a lunch detention • 3 ISD = ADIS + parent meeting + behavior contract

Suspension • The following will result in automatic suspension • Drugs or alcohol (even if you just touch it) • Weapons, guns, knives (even if you didn’t remember the knife was there or only held it briefly) • Fireworks • Fights/Assault • Sexual Harassment • Don’t get involved at all… just walk away!

Attendance • When people are late they are a distraction to others. • Tardies are tracked by period and are cumulative each trimester. • In your seat, ready to work when the bell rings 1st and 2nd tardy = no consequence 3rd tardy = meet with Mr. Morgan / call home 4th and 5th tardy = referral + ASD 6th tardy = referral + ADIS + Restricted Activities

  22. Dress Code • No references to: drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex, or violent or demeaning behavior. • No pajama pants or bare feet. • No sagging. Pants must be worn at hips • No exposed cleavage, torso, or upper thigh (skirts/shorts must come to the fingers) • Tank top straps must be 3 inches or wider • No muscle shirts Just remember… When in doubt, don’t

Electronics and Personal Items • Prohibited – NEVER to be at school • rollerblades • skateboards • anything to sell • weapons • fireworks (+poppers) • drugs/alcohol • Result in Suspension • Restricted – to be OFF and AWAY during school hours • cell phones • music players • portable game devices • cameras • Result in referrals You are responsible for your stuff. Keep it with you at all times or locked in your locker.

Academic Honesty • If you are the person who cheats, or the person who knowingly provides the work to cheat from, you are cheating • Cheat sheets • Looking at another person’s test • Plagiarizing a paper • “Borrowing” someone’s homework • Consequences are • First offense = referral + zero on the assignment/test • Future offense (any time at CMS) = suspension Be responsible for your own work!

Bullying, Teasing, and Harassment • Types of Bullying • Physical - Racial/Religious • Verbal - Sexual • Social - Written or Cyber • Consequences will get severe fast • Referral + Detention • Referral + Behavior Contract + ADIS • Suspension + talk with the Sheriff • Recommendation for Expulsion

Bullying, Teasing, and Harassment • TAKE A STAND THIS YEAR • Pledge to make today a better day for everyone • Look for the best in others • Use kind words and actions • Give up putdowns • Don’t spread rumors • Have the courage to tell people who are being mean to stop • We only know if you say something… • telling is not tattling

  27. Cafeteria Rules • You may only stand in line if you are buying lunch • Enter the hot lunch line by walking AROUND the outside of the tables • You MUST sit down when you are in the cafeteria…if you are standing up, you must leave.

All other areas are OFF LIMITS. To access one of our supervised areas you may walk through a non-green zone. Students found loitering in unsupervised (non-green) areas will be given a referral and lunch detention. Sports Fields Quiet Quad You may not wander from room to room. Once you have selected a room to visit during lunch please remain there.

Athletics • Is an earned privilege. • To be eligible for a CMS team, on the most recent trimester grade report you must have • At least a 2.0 GPA • No F’s • No more than 1 U citizenship grades You will need to keep your grades up and be on your best behavior all year to represent CMS in athletics!

  31. Classroom visits • Sometimes people will be visiting classrooms • When someone comes in, stay focused on what is going on in the classroom • Do not acknowledge them before they acknowledge you

  32. Stay focused on • Learning • Becoming a better person • Treating others well • Building positive relationships • Improving someone else’s day … And this will be a great year.
