  1. Aruba at HiST Presentation for colleagues in Uninett-land 30.10.2013 Arnt Richard Rørvik, SPO/ICT, head of Development of ICT-services in HiST.

  2. Welcome! The following material is a smallpresentationofwireless at HiST, theUniversity College ofSor-Trondelag, Trondheim. First a small – and very Norwegian – greeting:-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K83J_Oyc8sw The opinions expressed in these PP-slides arethoseoftheauthor; and may or may not representofficial HiST views and strategies.

  3. 1.0 (2007/2008-2010) • Objectives: • Focusingon robust high-capacitywirelessanywhere • ReducingnumberofeSSID’s: hist-guestandeduroam • Definingclassesof service: • User groups, accesscontrol, QoS, services, securityrestrictions. • Goal defined, mechanismslimited per 2007: • Nettworklevel, vlanoverrides, packet filters • Pervasivecomputing – same services anywhere • Easeofuse • Single signon

  6. 1.0 • Coverage: • 100% for portable computers- Pc, Mac, indoor • High aggregatebandwidth in highusage areas (auditoriums etc.) • In theforefront in terms of 802.11n: Cisco Aironet 1252, late 2008. • Working! • Extracabling (not in use), or plannedcabling for increaseddensity and coverage • Outdoorcoveragebetweenbuildings

  7. 1.0 • Policy: Decommissioningold radio technologyas quickly as possible • Turning off802.11b – consumingairtime from g/n • RestrictingtheuseofunauthorisedAPs • Additionalreguirements: Hosting in-house alienvenues • Reducinginterferencewithinpremises

  8. 1.0 • Radiation & health: Policy vs. employees • Importantaspect. Corporateresponsibility. • Recentresearch(R. Oftedal) • Norms: ICNIRP, PTT, other gov. institutions • Psychology: • HiddenAPs (but losing some signal strength) • No Aps in offices • Distanceimportant – Aps oflittlesignificancewithHiST’splacementofAPs • Employeesownuseofdevices most significant – distance to antennas. • Cellulars – much more powerful • Antenna placement and distanceimportant • Cisco Wism (1) and Cisco Aironet 1252 implementation • Trickygetting all kindsofequipment online with stable connections

  9. Agenda . 2.0 (2012/13) • Updatedambitions: • Increaseduseofwirelessamong students • Office 365/ Lync Online, multimedia, small videos etc. • Requirementsofemployees • Means for an end: • New buildings– evenhigherdensity • 802.11ac – right time to og for it?

  10. 2.0 (2010-2015) • We have Cisco, wouldweneedanythingelse? • Price competitionwithcertainperformancedemands – • Uninett-facilitated • Aruba won • Buthowoften is it practical to changevendor? Transitioncostsetc.? • eduroam «basic» • Quick and simple job - «do it yourself»

  11. 2.0 • eduroam«full package» • Airwave, Clear Pass Policy Manager (CPPM) • Major job, includingguestmodule • Deployment example: HHiT • 65 dBmrequirement • HHiT 10000 m2., 125 APs, => 78 m2/AP. -> ca. 8,8 m. betweeneachAP • Directional antennas (combi 2.4/5 GHz Aruba) in auditoriums • HHiT • Dividingintosectors • «Over-head antennas» • Antennas under theseat – not in compliancewithcompanypolicy • Beamshaping • ClientMatch etc. • Better clientcontrol

  12. 2.0 • Why 802.11ac for HiST? • Planning for evenhigherwifidemand • Demandsrocketing. Lync Online/onsite a major driver. • 802.11ac a superior standard • Patchingmany standard flawsof 802.11g/n (and earlier) • 5 GHz withincreasedreach (standardizing beamforming more) and shorterairtime • Standardized support for directingclients, powerconsumed etc.

  13. 2.0 • New buildings: Planned from ground-up «cable-wise» • Planning usingVisualRF • Prettymuch a solid performer, 3D (floorabove/underneath) • Cabling & mounting a fixedcost • => Lowwhendoing it up-front/whenbuildingsbuilt • => Tearingdownequipment and replacingAPs just a fewyears later is expensive • => Re-planning coverage is expensive (difficult to re-usecablingunlessdoing an up-front coverage planning for AC) • => Re-cabling is veryexpensive • Hopefully, planning in Trådløst HiST 1.0 still useful for 2.0/AC.

  14. 2.0 • From nowon, completing Trådløst HiST 2.0: • 802.11ac on all newcampuses • Graduallyreplacing 802.11n, 400 APs in 2014. • Considering «eduroam at home» • Internetconnectionpayed for by HiST • Require to useof a HiST Remote AP? • Prioritizingtrafficofthe HiST employee. • Offeringeduroam to eduroamusers in thevincinity. Trådløst HiST 3.0? More open More secure Simpler to use With predictablecapacity, growing in stepwithdeman

  15. 2.0 • Airwave • Running in VM (Vmware) • Very simple to install & use • VisualRF a goodexample; bothmonitoring & planning. • Clear Pass Policy Manager • Alsovirtualized (Vmware) • Starring: «Guestmodule» • Alsoappearingonthe show: 802.11ac clients • DEMO! (AT LAST) :-)
