  1. Romans 15:24-33 • I hope to see you in passing as I go to Spain, and to be helped on my journey there by you, once I have enjoyed your company for a while. At present, however, I am going to Jerusalem bringing aid to the saints. For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. • For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings.

  2. When therefore I have completed this and have delivered to them what has been collected, I will leave for Spain by way of you. I know that when I come to you I will come in the fullness of the blessing of Christ. I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, • that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints, so that by God's will I may come to you with joy and be refreshed in your company. May the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

  3. Lessons On Giving From The Saints In Macedonia

  4. The Circumstances • A need arose because of the famine. • Saints were called upon to help one another. • Faithful brethren would collect the funds.

  5. Potential Problems • Would they give? • Could they give? • Would Gentiles give to Jews? • Would Jews accept help from Gentiles?

  6. The Saints Position & Paul’s View • For Macedonia and Achaia have been pleased to make some contribution for the poor among the saints at Jerusalem. • For they were pleased to do it, and indeed they owe it to them. For if the Gentiles have come to share in their spiritual blessings, they ought also to be of service to them in material blessings. Romans 15:26-27

  7. What Can We Learn From Macedonia?

  8. God’s Grace Was With Them • We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia,(2 Cor 8:1) • God’s grace • 1a) that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech • 2) good will, loving-kindness, favour

  9. God’s Grace Saved The Gentiles • As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' • If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in God's way?" When they heard these things they fell silent. And they glorified God, saying, "Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance that leads to life." Acts 11:17-18

  10. Inward Desire Outweigh Outward Circumstances • for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part (2 Cor. 8:2). • 1. severe test of affliction. • 2. abundance of joy. • 3. extreme poverty. • 4. overflowed in a wealth of generosity.

  11. The Will Is Almost Limitless • For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, (2 Cor. 8:3). • 1. They gave • 2. Paul was a witness • 3. According to their means • 3. Beyond their means • 4. Willingly

  12. Attitude Equals Altitude • begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints– (2 Cor. 8:4). • 1. They saw giving as an opportunity. • 2. The cause was righteous. • 3. They wanted to help. • 4. Saints have an outlook the world can’t see Acts 4:41; Phil. 1:21-22.

  13. They Ordered Their Giving and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us (2 Cor 8:5). 1. They exceeded expectation. 2. They first is the most important.

  14. Paul Practiced What He Preached But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ Philippians 3:8-9

  15. The Macedonian Saints Teach Us • God’s grace is with us. • Our inward desire is greater than outward circumstances. • Our will is almost limitless. • Our attitude determines altitude. • We must order our giving.
