  2. Starting point: Most parents want the best for their children. Most parents want to protect their children and to keep them safe. Most parents want their children to be healthy and happy. Schools do too………………………SRE is part of this

  4. Where did YOU learn about Sex and Relationships? Parents? Friends? School? Magazines? Television? ?????? Was the information accurate? Were there any myths? Did anything you heard frighten you? Did you understand it all?

  5. Where do children now learn about Sex and Relationships? Parents/carers? Friends? School? Lessons/playground? Magazines? Television? INTERNET? MOBILE PHONES? What would be our preferred options?

  9. What is sex and relationships education? • It is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality, and sexual health. It is not about the promotion of sexual activity – this would be inappropriate teaching. (Department for Children, School and Families)

  10. The main aims for SRE in our local Schools • To enable young people to understand and respect their bodies, and be able to cope with the changes puberty brings (without fear)

  11. To help young people develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age, development etc (respect for self and others)

  12. To support young people to have positive self and body-image, and to understand the influences and pressures around them (to be themselves)

  13. To make informed choices when they are considering starting a sexual relationship, so that they keep themselves safe and don’t find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy or sexually transmitted infection

National Curriculum ScienceKey Stage 1 Pupils should be taught: That animals, including humans, move, feed, grow, use their senses and reproduce (Sc1b) To recognise and compare the main external parts of the bodies of humans (2a) That animals and humans can reproduce offspring and these grow into adults (2f) To recognise similarities and differences between themselves and others and treat others with sensitivity (4a)

  15. National Curriculum Science Key Stage 2 Pupils should be taught: • About main stages of the human life cycle (Sc2, 2f); • About human reproduction (Sc2, 2a)

  16. Parents have the legal right to withdraw their children from the SRE included in the PSHE Education curriculum (as that is non-statutory), But not from the Sex Education included in the National Curriculum Science Orders

  27. So what do we teach about Sex and Relationships in our Primary Schools through the Rainbow Scheme of Work? All in the context of the whole PSHEE curriculum and underpinned by the value system of the school ie valuing loving, stable relationships, respect for each other etc.

  28. The full Rainbow picture Year 1 Changes: Thinking about changes we have already experienced eg starting school. What can I do now and how do I feel about changes happening? Change is normal. Good to be me: Being safe: personal hygiene, diseases, safe use of medicine.

  29. The full Rainbow picture Year 2 Changes: Changing our behaviour, habits, group problem solving. We have choices about our own behaviour. Respect for others. Good to be me: My special body, naming body parts.

  30. The full Rainbow picture Year 3 Changes: Changes happen to us all. Sometimes these are uncomfortable. I can cope with change and the feelings it brings. Body changes in puberty (DVD Unit 1 ,Prog 3 Growing Up)

Enhanced Changes: Girls only lesson (possibly with school nurse) Managing Periods Boys only lesson, changes in puberty for boys How babies are made, (Unit 2, Prog 5) (sexual intercourse/ sex is a special form of touching for adults in loving relationships ) Staying safe Stereotyping
