  4. I’M A BLOOD DONOR High School Students contribute about 20% of all blood collected on mobile blood drives. Although they may have different interests or reasons for donating, they all share one thing in common. They are heroes… They are blood donors.

  6. 10. KNOW THE NEED Did You Know? • The Community Blood Center has been serving the greater Kansas City Region for over 50 years and supplies over 70 local hospitals. We provide 99% of the blood to our community members • We must collect 580 units daily to supply local hospitals enough blood for patients in need

KNOW THE NEED • 60% of the population is eligible to donate, but only 5% do • 1 in 3 people will need a blood product in their lifetime • 1 pint of blood can save up to 2 lives • Donors are eligible to give every 56 days - only a small percentage give > 1 time • There is no substitute for human blood • Every 4 minutes, someone in the KC Metro area needs blood

PLAN YOUR DRIVE • Set the date: keep in mind other school schedules, i.e. late start days, testing, school events calendar • Secure the space: Gym, Theater, Band Room, Commons Area, etc. • Create a committee: determine roles • Set a challenging, but realistic GOAL… plan to reach it! - About 25% of students will not complete the donation process.

  9. 8. GET DONATIONS (FOOD/GOODIES) AND/OR HAVE A GIVE-AWAY Everyone Loves Free Stuff • Ask for help: find a sponsor • Secure free food: Donors love something extra to choose from • Have a raffle item(s) • Everyone gets a t-shirt • Think outside the box Ideas or examples?

  12. 7.HAVE A THEME/SLOGAN: MAKE DONATING FUN FOR EVERYONE • Create a BLOOD BOARD: every donors gets to put his/her name on a blood drop • Graph your goal and fill in as the drive continues EXAMPLES/IDEAS???

  13. 6. TARGET NEW & REPEAT DONORS • Invite EVERYONE: Students, parents, faculty, community (where appropriate) • Why NEW donors? - Target newly eligible students to become life-long donors -Most people don’t think about donating until they are asked

  14. 6. TARGET NEW & REPEAT DONORS • Why REPEAT donors? - An experienced donor knows what to expect and how to prepare - Why stop at one donation? If everyone who has donated at least once would donated 2 times per year, there would never be a shortage • Both can help support the community hospitals and patients all year long • Donations count for community service

PROGRAMS ESPECIALLY FOR HIGH SCHOOL DONORS • Remember: You can donate every 56 days - 6 times a year - Up to 24 for platelets • Donate 8 times before graduation and you will have given a gallon (prior donations count) • Give at your high school blood drive, CBC collection centers or other mobiles near you

  17. HOW HIGH SCHOOL DONORS HELP DURING SUMMER MONTHS • During the summer months the blood supply drops by as much as 30% • Warm weather = outdoor activities = increased traumas • Many “regular” donors are taking vacations • #1 Reason for the low supply… HIGH SCHOOLS ARE ON VACATION!!!

HOW HIGH SCHOOL DONORS HELP DURING SUMMER MONTHS • Hosting a summer blood drive allows your school to help save even more lives • Another chance to give = another donation towards the Gallon Grad Award • iDonate summer campaign gives HS students a chance to win cool apple products : iTunes, iShuffles, iPod Touch and an iPad

  24. 5. PROMOTE LIKE CRAZY Be Creative • Make posters, facebook event, text a friend or five, contact local media, morning announcements, school newsletter, advertise at student activities/sports events • Wear the Blood Drop Suit during lunchtime • Create a video • CBC’s new Annual Video Contest:

USE VOLUNTEERS WISELY • Pre/Post-registration table: track check-in/ check-out times to account for missed classes • 2-3 helpers at refreshment table, too many can be distracting • Gallon Grad expert to recruit donors while donors enjoy their snack • Back pack check-in: numbered stickers (1 on donor & 1 on bag) in designated area

  26. 4. USE VOLUNTEERS WISELY • “Walkers” to assist donors off beds and/or back to class • Save the best for last: Volunteers consider donating last so you have enough strength to last throughout the day • 1-2 hour shifts depending on # of volunteers Examples/Ideas???

STICK TO THE SCHEDULE • Master schedule is “The Key” to a smooth drive: Time is valuable • Host SIGN-UP table during lunch • Try to fill slots evenly on schedule: avoid creating back-up • Keep donor’s lunch schedule in mind • Remember your goal - 25% HS deferral rate • The entire process takes about 1 hour, but the actual draw/pumping time average is 5-10 minutes

  29. REMEMBER EVERY 2 SECONDS??? • 6 MINUTE EXERCISE…… • 1 minute = 60 seconds • 60 seconds/2 seconds = 30 people in this country need blood every minute • 30 people x 6 minutes = 180 people in this country will have needed blood during our exercise. WHAT’S A MINUTE TO YOU?

  30. 2. EDUCATE: A WELL PREPARED DONOR IS A HAPPY DONOR Know “The Rules” • Legal requirements: • Minimum age = 16 yrs Parental Consent for 16-yr-olds and school’s requirements for consent • Photo ID with DOB • 115+ lbs NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

  31. 2. EDUCATE: A WELL PREPARED DONOR IS A HAPPY DONOR Important steps to take BEFORE donating: • Get plenty of rest • Eat healthy/hearty meals - high iron foods 3. Drink plenty of water - stay away from caffeine - consider handing out water bottles day before drive, stress enhancing brochures - ALL donors will be encouraged to drink water BEFORE they donate

  32. HOW IMPORTANT IS WATER? • ? % of Americans are chronically dehydrated? Answer: 75% • In ? % of Americans the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger. Answer: 37% • Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue ? % of the time? Answer: 100%

  33. HOW IMPORTANT IS WATER? • A mere ? % drop in body water can trigger short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or a printed page. Answer: 2% ARE YOU GETTING THIRSTY YET?
