  1. Energy MeteringAdvanced Technologies &Futuristic View Presented By G.Vinaya Kumar, BE(Hons), MIE Director (Operation), CPDCL Retd.

  2. Utility’s Requirements • Commercial Operations • Financial Evaluations • Energy Audit • Distribution Business (Franchisees, etc.) • Grid Control, Load Despatch • Load Survey • Power Purchase, ABT • SCADA • Statistical Analysis, Quality Evaluation, etc.

  3. Existing Scenario Traditionally, Utilities Have… • Variety of Makes, Models, Types &Versions • No Uniform Standard either in Features, Protocols, Communication Methods • Incompatible Softwares, Platforms • No Uniform Standards • No Single Common Meter Reading Instrument Compatible for the existing Meter Base

  4. Communications • PSTN, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, CDMA, RF, PLCC, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, WIMAX • Modems with interoperable Protocols • Operating Systems: DOS, Win98, Win XP, Vista, Linux, etc. • Database: SQL Server, Oracle, Access, etc.

  5. Vision For Future Smart & Intelligent Energy Meter with.. • Capability to Read KWh, KVAh & PF as Billing Parameters • In-built Communication of its own • Load Survey Data Storage For 45 Days • Selective Download Facility from Stored Data • Wireless Communication preferable between Consumers’ Gadgets • PLCC Communication over the LT Lines

  6. Wish List • 2-Way Communication Facility • To Display Bill Amount, Due Date, etc. • Voice Provision • To Announce Bill Amount, Due Date, etc. • Inter-Operable Communication Capability with other Devices in a House or Vicinity

  7. Accuracy of Meter • Undue Importance is being given by Many to Meter Accuracy; But… • High Capacity Meters for Low Loads • Low Power Factor • Higher CT Ratios Adopted • Higher CT, PT Accuracies, etc. should make anybody to think twice before insisting Higher Accuracy better than 0.5 Class

  8. Any Questions? ThanQ
