Sleep Deprivation Among College Students • Impracticality of being human sloths • Based on personal experience, the decision was made to study the lack of proper sleep quality among college students. • Sleep quality (type and consistency) vs. Sleep quantity (amount of sleep) • According to researchers like Serge Onyper of the Department of Psychology at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and Hannah Lund of Virginia Commonwealth university, a college student needs 8.4 hours of sleep but many report to receiving roughly 6 or 7 • Based on their studies Students reported that due to the lack of proper sleep, they suffered negative effects

  3. Causes of Sleep Deprivation • Sleep Delay • Stress • Active Social Life • Sporadic Schedules • Jobs • Class/Assignments • Clubs/Sports Obligations

  4. Effects of Sleep Deprivation • More Stress • Poorer performance • Irritability • Drowsiness/fatigue • Headaches • Increased use of OTC drugs, alcohol and energy drinks

  5. Sleep Logs • Anecdotal • Roughly 2 week period • To get feedback • When one’s sleep is in sync daytime functionality increases • Noticed sporadic sleep schedules
