  2. Who is Responsible for Holding the Parent Election The law states “the election shall be conducted by the parent-teacher organization or, if none exist, the largest organization of parents formed for this purpose.

  3. Who serves on the Council • Principal • Three teachers elected by teachers • Two parents elected by PTA • Alternative council (check your council bylaws)

  4. “Parent” Means….. • A parent, stepparent, or foster parent of a student. • A person who has legal custody of a student pursuant to a court order and with whom the student resides.

  5. What Parent Can Serve on the SBDM Council • Shall not be an employee or the relative of an employee of the school in which the parent serves. • Shall not be employees or relatives of employees of the district’s central office, nor shall they be a local board member or his/her spouse. • Relative is defined as “father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, son-in-law, or daughter-in-law.

  6. Minority Member • Must have 8% of your student population listed as minority. • Minority is defined as American Indian, Alaskan Native, African-American, Hispanic, including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central or South American Origin, Pacific Islander, or other ethnic group under-represented in the schools.

  7. What is the procedure for election of the Minority person • Is the administrator a minority? • Did the teachers elect a minority? • Did the parents elect a minority? If not, • Principal will call a meeting of all parents in the school to have an election for a minority parent • Teachers will hold an election of their minority teachers to elect a minority teacher.

  8. Make up a your new Council • One administrator • Four teachers (one a minority) • Three parents (one a minority)

  9. Who Can Vote for Parent Member • If they have a student pre-registered to attend school during the term of office. (check council bylaws) • Parents of current students who will be continuing at the same school in the fall. • Parents of new students who are pre-registered to attend the school in the fall, such as a student attending school for the first time. • Teachers who has a child pre-registered in the same school in which they work. They can also vote in the teacher election.

  10. Who Can Not Vote • Parents of students who will be attending another school in the fall. • Parents of students who are graduating.

  11. SBDM Parent Election Procedure • Meet with Principal A. Method for the parent election B. Date of the Election C. Deadline date for nomination forms to be returned to school D. Method on information on nominees E. Establish Committees (if necessary) 1. Nominating Committee 2. Voter Registration Committee 3. Election Committee

  12. Nominating Committee • A. Meets to discuss deadline for nominations B. Discuss contents of nomination form C. Send first letter home to parents 1. General information about SBDM 2. Qualifications of parent nominees 3. Deadline for nominations to be turned in 4. Parent Election date and time D. Send second letter for reminder of elections

  13. Voter Registration Committee • Prepare Ballots • School registration to determine who can vote • Sign in sheet • Procedure for voting during election process • Voting Site

  14. Election Committee • President appoints 3 people to tally up the votes • Disseminate the election results to the parents A. On bulletin board B. In newsletter C. Post on front door • Parent Representative Council Member Election Records should be kept in school for three years including letters, ballots, registration.
