  1. SWBAT analyze world population patterns (distribution and density.) Where do people live and why?

  2. DO NOW: Read the article from the Take Me bin and be ready to discuss it. 5 min

  3. Who/what …………………………………………… (did) what …………………………………………… When …………………………………………… Where …………………………………………… Why …………………………………………… How …………………………………………… T.S (topic sentence) ________________________________________________________________________________________ Details 1. …………………………………………… 2. …………………………………………… 3. …………………………………………… 4. …………………………………………… C. 4. Describe your ideal place to live. • Where is this place located (city, state, country, continent)? • Why do you want to live there? • What is the weather like there? • What kinds of physical and human characteristics exist in this place? Do Now

  5. BIG IDEAHumans are not evenly distributed across the Earth. (There are two ways to examine pop. patterns – distribution and density.)

  6. This cartogram depicts the size of countries according to population rather than size Distribution – where are people living?

  7. Answer the following question in a solid paragraph in your notebook: What makes a location a good place to live? Refer to physical (bodies of water, land forms, etc.) and human characteristics (cultural traditions and things humans made) as much as possible. Stockholm, Sweden was voted the nicest city to live in (2009) Do Now:

  8. Catch-up lesson: Where people live and why • Q & A Review • Quest on Population • OT/start on homework Stockholm, Sweden was voted the nicest city to live in (2009) Agenda:

  9. The places people live are called ecumene regions, or places permanently inhabited by humans. Why? People tend to live • Near water (oceans, rivers and lakes) • In temperate climates Where do people live?

  10. Key Facts about the Ecumene: • Most of the world lives near the middle of earth – between the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn • China is the most populous country • Africa is the fastest growing continent • ¾ of the world lives on less that 5% of the earth’s surface Ecumene Regions

  11. The places people do not live are called nonecumene regions, or places not inhabited by humans. Why? People don’t want to live where it’s: • Too dry • Too wet • Too cold • Too high Where do people avoid?

  12. Antarctica • Sahara Desert • Australian Outback • Far north of Arctic Circle Nonecumene Regions

  13. Population density is the number of people divided by the total land area. Density – how close are people living to each other?

  14. Arithmetic – total number of people divided by total land area(also called population density) Physiological – number of people supported by unit of land suited for agriculture (arable land) Agricultural- number of farmers per area of arable land Three Types of Population Density

  15. Number of people Population density =___________________ Land area (sq. miles) For the United States… 300 million people ___________________ = 82 people/sq. mi. 3.7 million sq. miles Calculating Population Density (also called arithmetic density)

  16. Answering document based questions about population distribution and density • Use the map series in your text book to help you answer the questions • Use complete sentences! • Expectation: silent work time, raise your hand if you need help! Independent Work time
