  2. Key Concepts Location-based Information CarbonCloud and Peers Creating & Sharing Content Groups Smart Search

  3. Location-based Information • Location-based information (referred to as geospatial) is widespread. • Some estimate that as much as 90% of all digital content has some degree of ‘location’ reliance in it. • This type of digital content is all around us – GPS, digital photos, mapping services, air-traffic data, electricity grids, real estate and bank transactions, defense and intelligence and more….

  4. Carbon Project Mission • Pioneer innovative .NET technologies to make location-based information accessible and usable to everyone, everywhere • Extend .NET Framework – CarbonTools • New tools for Location-based Social Networking™

  5. Who? • Nuke Goldstein - Founder of The Carbon Project and its CTO. • Jeff Harrison - Co-Founder of The Carbon Project and its President and CEO.

  6. CarbonCloud™ • Revolutionary peer-to-peer (P2P) framework for location content. • Functions similar to how P2P media sharing works - except it’s a P2P framework for creating, sharing and searching for location-based content in online communities and social networking groups. • Does for location-based content what’s already been done for music and entertainment.

  7. Peer-to-Peer • CarbonCloud P2P users, called Peers, are both client and server - not just ‘consumers’, but also ‘producers’. • P2P framework enables ad-hoc and survivable networks – powerful addition to Crisis Response. • Advanced Caching and Geospatial Session Files for performance and survivability - online, or offline. PEER-TO-PEER NETWORKING

  8. Creating Content -77.0515,38.8728 This Place is Awesome! Mallory’s digital camera with geostamped pictures

  9. Mallory Shares her Note plus Geostamped Pictures and Map with her Groups… …Beth Searches the Cloud over this area and finds Mallory’s Note Thanks! Sharing Content Mallory Beth

  10. Groups • Groups are the basic unit for sharing experiences about places. • Form to share experiences over particular areas - like a weekend tour of Virginia’s wineries or a flea market in Washington, DC. • Once a Group is formed, people connect to it through invitation - invitation-based Groups increase the chances of developing a trusted network to share digital pictures, notes and location content.

  11. Developing Groups • Once the Group is online and active it connects people who want to get connected • Develops over time as more location content is shared from one peer in the CarbonCloud to another. • Experiences can even be shared as they are occurring - opening up new modes of sharing content in ad hoc and survivable networks.

  12. Another Example…

  13. Integrate Location-based Content Add and Share Notes And Digital Pictures Add and Share Channels

  15. CarbonCloud™

  16. CarbonAtlas - Search Encodes the spatial, ontologic and ‘partonomic’ knowledge of experts to deliver the best location content. “Hey Group, what are the best places to visit in this Region?” MyPlace: Cool Art Museum MyPlace: Great Food Place -77.0515,38.8728

  17. The Museum District is Highly Rated. Best Places? isPartof isPartof MyPlace: Cool Art Museum MyPlace: Great Food Place -77.0515,38.8728

  18. CarbonCloud™ - Create, Share and Search • Two types of Search • What the “CarbonAtlas” knows about • Local content (peer-to-peer) • Integrated into CarbonTools PRO, Echo and Gaia • May be integrated into any .NET applications with CarbonTools PRO Groups

  19. Based on CarbonTools PRO • Extension to .NET 2.0 framework • Light non-intrusive (GIS independent) libraries • Integrate multiple sources - Google Earth, OGC, Tile-based Maps, RSS, ESRI, Autodesk, etc • Powerful symbology engine • Create, Search and Share • Serialized, transportable geospatial session files and user-generated content with the CarbonCloud framework • Social networks with a “geospatial spin” - CarbonCloud • July 2006 Launch
