  1. Joints

  2. Do Now • How many different motions can the following exhibit? • Shoulder • Elbow • Knee • Wrist

  3. What are Joints? • The place where two bones interconnect • Also called articulations • Characteristics determined by function

  4. Types of Joints • Immovable (synarthoses) • bones sutured together by connective tissue • skull • Slightly movable (amphiarthoses) • connected by fibrocartilage or hyaline cartilage • vertebrae, rib/sternum joint, pubic (symphysis) • Freely movable (diarthroses)- separated • ligaments- hold bones together • tendons- muscle to bone • lined by synovial membrane

  5. Types of Moveable Joints • Ball-and-socket joints • formed when a rounded head of one bone fits into the rounded cavity of an jointed bone • Shoulder and hip • Hinge joints • Allow bone to bend and straighten • include elbow, knee, ankle, and fingers • Gliding • Sliding and twisting • Wrist and ankle

  6. Types of Moveable Joints • Pivot joints • allow limited rotation or turning of the head • Ellipsoidal joints • bone in wrist, and a oval shaped part that fits in a curved space • the joints slide over each other

  7. Structure of a Synovial Joint • Articular capsule • Surrounds the synovial joint • Synovial membrane lines the walls of the articular cavity • Synovial fluid fills the joint cavity • Bony surfaces covered by articular cartilages • Reduce friction
