  5. Scope and Sequence Unit 1: Short Stories & Of Beetles and Angels Essential Questions: What is the relationship between decisions and consequences? What factors influence whether you are successful or unsuccessful in achieving goals? How is it true that everyone is “handicapped?”

  6. Unit 2: The Journey Novel Study: The Hobbit Essential Questions: 1.Why does happiness seem to be elusive for so many people? 2. What does our society view as heroic? 3. How can life experience(s) define a person’s identity?

  7. Unit 3: Search for Justice Novel Study: Whale Talk & excerpts from To Kill a Mockingbird Essential Questions: How does labeling/stereotyping influence how we look at and understand the world? How do people who have been through traumatic events cope with challenges in their lives? What are potential conflicts when one person’s reality is another person’s illusion?

  8. Unit 4: The Complexity of Relationships Romeo and Juliet Essential Questions: How is an individual’s life affected by outside events, situations, or cultural, political, and social trends? Despite external differences, what are the universal concerns facing mankind throughout time? How does learning about others teach us about ourselves?
