  3. June 29, 1900 • Antoine de Saint-Exupery was born on June 29, 1900. The first time Antoine flew a plane was when he was twelve years old at the Amberieu airfield, that’s when he figured out when he wanted to become a pilot. • Saint-Exupery failed the entrance exams for the French naval academy so instead, was enrolled at the prestigious art school I’Ecole des Beaux-Arts • The narrator in the Little Prince was a pilot just like Saint-Exupery • Just like the narrator in the story, Saint-Exupery also flew over the AmberieuAirfeild In 1900

  4. 1926 • He went back to flying after leaving service in the military • He was signed on as a pilot for Areopostale, which was a private airline that flew mail from Toulouse, France, to Dakar, Senegal, where he and his copilot crashed their plane.

  5. 1928 • In a letter Saint-Exuprey wrote to his sister Didi from the Western Sahara’s where he was the manager of an airmail stopover station in 1928, he tells of raising a fennec ( a desert sand fox) which he adored. • During his service in the mail pilot in the North African Sahara desert, Saint-Exupery saw a desert sand fox, which was most likely what created the fox character in the Little Prince

  6. December 30. 1935 • After 19 hours in the air Saint-Exupery, with his copilot-navigator, Andre Prevot crashed into the Sahara desert wile trying to break a record for a Pairs-to-Saigon flight in a then popular type of air race called a raid. • Both survived, but they face rapid dehydration in the intense desert heat. They were lost among the sand dunes with only a few grapes, a thermos of coffee, one orange, some wine, and a few days worth of water. • In the Little Prince the narrator had crashed his plane in the Sarah desert just like Saint-Exupery did in the real world • The Little Prince and the pilot also had the same problem as Saint-Exupery and his copilot-navigator with the lack of food and water.

  7. February 1939 • Germany and the Soviet union attacked Poland and Brittan • France India Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany • U.S.A decided to remain neutral, but did begin remaining for war which helped end the Great Depression • On February 19, 1939 is when the Book Wind, Sand, and Stars , a book also by Saint-Exupery, was translated and published in English by Reynal and Hitchcock and later in the year.
