  1. Urethral Stricture: Causes and Treatment

  2. Urethral Stricture: Causes and Treatment The Urethra is a tube inside the body that helps in passing out urine from the body. This thin- tube also plays an important role in ejaculation, for men. When a scar from swelling, injury, or infection blocks or slow down the flow of urine in this tube, it is called Urethral Stricture. Strictures that happen in the first 1" to 2" of the Urethra are called Posterior Urethral Strictures. Strictures that happen in the last 9" to 10" of the Urethra are called Anterior Urethral Strictures. Men are more likely to suffer from a urethral disease or injury because of their longer urethra.

  3. What are the Causes of Urethral Stricture? Some common causes include trauma to the urethra, infection such as a sexually transmitted disease, damage from surgical tools, conditions that cause swelling. Other causes can be an injury from a fall onto the scrotum or perineum, prostate surgery, kidney stone removal, urinary catheterization, etc.

  4. What are Urethral-Stricture Symptoms? These include a slow and interrupted urinary stream or inability to urinate. These can also be linked with urinary frequency, pain or burning sensation during urination, pelvic pain or pain in the lower abdominal area, presence of blood in the semen or urine, slow or decreased urine stream, urethral leaking, Urinary Tract Infections, swelling of the penis, loss of bladder control, etc. Either a physical examination or a diagnostic test confirms Urethral Stricture. This includes an Imaging test with X-rays called a Retrograde-Urethrogram, Urine-Flow-Test or Ultrasound to see how the urine flow is affected by the urethral stricture, Cystoscopy, where a small lubricated fibreoptic-scope is used into the urethra to see the location and appearance of the stricture and Urethroscopy where the doctor gently places a small, bendable, lubricated scope (a small viewing instrument) into the urethra.

  5. Urinary Stricture Treatment is decided by the observations depending on how large the blockage is and how much scar tissue is there. Treatment options include: Urethral Dilation, where the urethra is widened using a series of gradually-larger dilating instruments and a cystoscope. Internal Urethrotomy, where the cystoscope is used with a special tool to cut the ring of scar tissue and open the area-of-blockage. Urethral Reconstruction is usually needed when dilation or Urethrotomy fails and when the stricture returns. Urethroplasty or surgical reconstruction of the urethra is generally treated as a permanent cure. Without treatment, urinary and/or testicular infections and stones could develop. A severe blockage that lasts a long time and it can damage the kidneys or could lead to an enlarged bladder.
