  2. Hong Kong Demographics • Hong Kong is located off the coast of The Republic of China • Population is 7 million people • One of the most densely populated places in the world, with 2502 per square mile • Languages – Cantonese, English

  3. HSBC • The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank or HSBC for short, was completed in 1985 • Its cost was 670 million US dollars to build, with inflation, the cost was around 1.4 billion dollars • Used 30,000 tons of steel • Used 4,500 tons of aluminum

Characteristics • Natural sunlight is the main source of light in the building • A natural bank of mirrors reflects sunlight into the atrium and down into the plaza • The floor is made of light weight movable panels, under which is a system of power, telecommunication, and air-conditioning systems

  5. Characteristics cont. • Components used in the creation of the HSBC were created all over the world • Structural Steel came from Britain • The glass, aluminum cladding, and flooring came from the US • The service modules came from Japan

  6. Designed by British Architect Lord Norman Foster and Ove Arup and Partners • This was the 4th redesign of the building, the first being built in 1864 • The current chairman of the bank is Vincent Cheng

  7. Lord Norman Foster • Born June 1st 1935 • Won a scholarship to Yale School of Architecture • Designed other great works, such as The Willis Building, Wembley Stadium, and 30 St Mary Axe
