  5. The Golden Era • The 1920’s was said to be the greatest era of baseball. • Many hero’s came out of this era • Blacks were still not allowed to play so on February 14, 1920 the National Negro Association was formed

  6. Babe Ruth • Greatest player who ever played • Sports first superstar • Amazing pitcher than switched to being a fielder • Holds many records • Played in New York

  7. Lou Gehrig • Had a disorder called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis , ALS • Nickname Iron House • Greatest first base of all time • Set many records (most grand slams)

  12. Reasons For Popularity • End of WWI • Needed Entertainment and something to follow • Free time and Radios became big and in every house hold

Important Dates • February 14, 1920- Formation of the Nation Negro Baseball Association • September 17, 1920- Formation of the National Football Association • In the 1920’s, Prize fighting for boxing was legalized • 1920, Walter Hagen became first American to win the open Championship • 1926, Ederle Gertrude became first women to swim the English Channel

Social Impacts • With the formation of the Negro Baseball League, it paved the way for equal rights and blacks, and whites playing together • prior to the 1920’s boxing was looked upon as a savage sport, but then embraced during WWI and after since it got the army recruits in shape and united groups. • Boxing was now able to be broadcasts through radio and was among the first sport to do so • More rules were put in place so it is safer • birth of sports advertisement.
