  1. X-band Radar Detection of Point Scatterers David Breton Nicholas Buckminster Michael Leuchtenburg Advisor: S. Frasier

  2. Now…. • Current System • FMCW • S-band • Clear-air scatter • Watch atmospheric boundary layer turbulence • Current system observes different types of scattering from other sources

  3. The Problem • Readings obscured by responses of small airborne objects in beam path • Measurements appear inconclusive without consistent data

  4. A Solution • X-band signal would produce much more intense response from point scatterers • Locations of insects could be used to resolve irregularities of S-band data • FMICW radar • available materials • development of control, processing, and storage systems

  5. Some Existing Systems • FMCW • Two Antenna Method • Leakage • Saturation of receiver • Isolation difficult • FMICW • One Antenna Method • T/R Switching

  6. The System • Transmitting • Oscillator • DDS • Amplifier • Antenna

  7. The System • Receiving • Band-pass filter • Amplifier • Mixer • Sampling

  8. Putting it all together

  9. Requirements • Interconnections…

  10. Requirements • X-band • Variable chirp bandwidth • Variable range resolution • Mobile/low power • Low Cost • Existing Hardware • Purchases

  11. Upcoming Events • MDR • Subsystems obtained and assembled • Interconnection requirements satisfied • Software interface designed • CDR • Processing software operational • Functional prototype • Demonstration Day • Thank You - Questions, please
