  1. POLLUTION AND THE GREENHOUSE GASES Man's activities release pollutants into the troposphere

  2. The Greenhouse Gases • Carbon Dioxide • Methane • Nitrous Oxide • CFCs • Ozone

  3. Longwave radiation from the Earth escapes through an infra-red window in the troposphere

  4. The greenhouse gases are filling this window

  5. Any change in the composition of the tropospheric atmosphere changes the thermal balance of the Earth

  6. Analyses of air bubbles trapped in glacial ice indicate that carbon concentrations were stable at 270-280 ppmv over the period from 10,000 years ago to the 19th century

  7. Since industrialisation, carbon dioxide which was fixed in the fossil fuels over a period of 28 million years has been released into the atmosphere via the combustion of fossil fuels

  8. As a result, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has built up from 270 ppmv in pre-industrial times to over 380 ppmv today and continues to rise at 1.5 ppmv each year

  9. The argument for global warming says that, even though the carbon released with fossil fuel combustion is small compared with the fluxes of the natural carbon cycle,

  10. the extra emitted CO2 is enough to disturb the thermal equilibrium of the Earth, stabilised at a global mean of 15 oC in pre-industrial times

  11. Tropospheric concentrations of Methane, Nitrous oxide and ozone are also building up So are the halocarbons The result is an increased concentration of all the greenhouse gases

  12. In 1988, the Toronto Protocol called for substantial cuts in global emissions of carbon dioxide

  13. The Prediction

  14. The Prediction

  15. The Total Amount of Carbon Dioxide Released into the Global Atmosphere from Fossil Fuel Combustionhas doubled since 1980

  16. The Prediction

  17. One-thirdof all the Carbon Dioxide Released into the Global Atmosphere from Fossil Fuel Combustion since pre-industrial times has been released since 1990

  18. The Prediction

  19. One-fifthof all the Carbon Dioxide Released into the Global Atmosphere from Fossil Fuel Combustion since pre-industrial timeshas been released since the year 2000!
