  2. Location • Shanghai is a municipality, or governmental city, such as Washington, D.C. Its absolute location is 31°N, 121°E. • Shanghai is about 680 miles from Beijing, and around 750 miles from Hong Kong.

  3. Place Physical Characteristics: Bodies of water: Shanghai is at the mouth of the Yangtze River, on the coast of the East China Sea. Landforms: Shanghai is located on a flat alluvial plain, with an average elevation of 4 meters. Climate: Subtropical Animal Life: Giant Panda, South Chinese Tiger, Takin, Chinese Alligator, Golden Lion Tamarin Natural Vegetation: Southeast China has almost all the types of vegetation found in the Northern Hemisphere, except polar tundra. If China were compared to a ladder, Shanghai would be at the bottom, in the humid, tropical environment. Human Characteristics: Population: 23,019,148 (2010) Ethnic Groups: 98.8% Han Chinese, 1.2% minority groups Language: Wu Chinese, Mandarin Customs: Shanghai is the country’s film and movie capital, the Chinese version of Los Angeles, U.S. Economy: Free Enterprise Government: Communistic

Human Environment Interaction • Dams: • There are no dams in the shanghai area. • Canals: • Although old Shanghai relied mostly on the Yangtze river for transport, new canals have been made around Shanghai in recent years to accommodate the larger amounts of shipping traffic in its growing economy. • Irrigation: • There is no longer farm land in the Shanghai area.

Movement • Movement of People: • Ethnic Groups who settled there: Han Chinese is China’s largest ethnic group. • Indians forced onto reservations: The Chinese are native to their land. • Slavery: Wealthy Chinese families would have slaves to do menial work for them. The Emperor and his court usually owned hundreds of slaves. Most people were born slaves, or sold to pay debts.
