  2. Tips & Guidance Seminar • Logistics – now, just before, on the day • Know your audience • Ideas and supporting materials • Questions from you … ?

  3. Things to establish before you go to school • What are you doing? • With whom? • When? • For how long? • You are NOT there to teach their children alone - classroom/behaviour management still the responsibility of the teacher • Can you take pictures?

  4. Things to check in advance • Is powerpoint available? • What will school provide? • Classroom / hall unlikely to have black-out facilities; use really clear images • How many pupils will you be working with or talking to? SEN? • Tell school what you need them to provide? – best to take your own. Ask but don’t rely!! • Plugs / water / sinks ??? • Would a pre-visit help you? Can this be arranged? • Share your ppt with link teacher

  5. Child Protection Code of Conduct • Consider your language • Watch out for suggestive comments • Be aware of personal space • Avoid physical contact • Don’t single people out • Watch out for causing embarrassment • Try not to be left on your own with pupils

  6. Just getting there • Allow plenty of time – Norwich ring road! • The school run • Parking at school ! • The front door(s)! • Getting stuff to/from the car – helpers? • Signing-in / out / wearing a visitors badge

  7. NEVER BE LATE!

  8. What can you offer to do? • Hands-on - very popular • All children like WOW factor things – explosions / noises / colour • If giving school assembly, think of concentration spans of 4 – 11 year olds! • Images

  9. The questions you might be asked • How much do you earn? • What have you discovered? • Why do you do science? • Be a good KISSAR – keep it short, simple and real • Don’t forget to mention the travel aspect, include pictures

  10. DO NOT TAKE… • ‘dirty’ objects / kit / labcoats • Hazardous chemicals – ethidium bromide contaminated pipettes! • Hazardous organisms – plant/microbe • Anything genetically modified • PAT testing

  11. When Preparing your Presentation... Ask questions, such that you can gauge the knowledge base of your audience and adapt your talk accordingly Decide on the message of your talk….what are you trying to achieve Pitch to the right level Speak slowly Simplify your talk - Don’t overwhelm them with too much information Take time to explain terminology……eg leukocyte = white blood cell

  12. Think about your Audience • You need to pitch your message for your audience, think about their interests, and use appropriate examples. • What is relevant, of interest to an 15 -18 yr old?
