  2. Did you ever wonderwhat the Hebrew Scriptures sayabout marriage and divorce?

  3. Two Choices: Love story Dry & Boring

  4. Love story:Man finds maiden,Man loses maiden,Man seeks maiden outMaiden returns to Him.

  5. Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 3:11 "They say, 'If a man divorces his wife, And she goes from him And becomes another man's, May he return to her again?' Would not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the harlot with many lovers; Yet return to Me," says Yahweh.

  6. Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 3:88 Then I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but went and played the harlot also.

  7. Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 3:1212 Go and proclaim these words toward the north, and say: 'Return, backsliding Israel,' says Yahweh; 'I will not cause My anger to fall on you. For I am merciful,' says Yahweh; 'I will not remain angry forever.

  8. Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 3:1313 Only acknowledge your iniquity, That you have transgressed against Yahweh your Elohim, And have scattered your charms To alien deities under every green tree, And you have not obeyed My voice,' says Yahweh.

  9. Yirmeyahu (Jeremiah) 3:1414 "Return, O backsliding children," says Yahweh; "for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city and two from a family, and I will bring you to Zion.

  10. Hoshea (Hosea) 1:22 When Yahweh began to speak by Hosea, Yahweh said to Hosea: "Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry And children of harlotry, For the land has committed great harlotry By departing from Yahweh."

  11. Hoshea (Hosea) 1:33 So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

  12. Hoshea (Hosea) 3:13 Then Yahweh said to me, "Go again, love a woman (Gomer) who is loved by a lover and is committing adultery, just like the love of Yahweh for the children of Israel, who look to other elohim (g-ds) and love the raisin cakes of the pagans."

  13. Hoshea (Hosea) 3:22 So I bought her for myself for fifteen shekels of silver, and one and one-half homers of barley.

  14. 1. Hoshea’s wife was committing adultery2. He did not divorce her3. He went to buy her back(That’s love.)

  15. Ephesim (Ephesians) 5:2525 Husbands, love your wives, just as Messiah also loved the ecclesia, and gave Himself for her,

  16. Ephesim (Ephesians) 5:2828 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.

  17. Laws & statutes vs. judgments:- Yahweh has laws, statutes, ordinances, and judgments.- Laws, statutes, and ordinances all pertain to when things are going normally.- Judgments are for when things go wrong.- (Make the best of a bad situation)

  18. Vayiqra (Leviticus) 20:10 (Law/Statute)10 'The man who commits adultery with another man's wife, he who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress, shall surely be put to death. Law / Statute

  19. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 24:1 (Judgment)24 "When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she finds no favor in his eyes because he has found some uncleanness in her,(i.e., some adultery/sexual immorality)and he writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house (to cause her to repent)… Judgment

  20. “Uncleanness” OT:6172OT:6172 `ervah (er-vaw'); from OT:6168; nudity, literally (especially the pudenda) or figuratively (disgrace, blemish):KJV - nakedness, shame, unclean (-ness). “Ervah”

  21. 2 if she has departed from his house, and goes and becomes another man's wife(i.e., if she remarries, which she should not), 3 if the latter husband detests her and writes her a certificate of divorce, puts it in her hand, and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies who took her as his wife, Judgment

  22. 4 then her former husband who divorced her must not take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled; for that is an abomination before Yahweh, and you shall not bring sin on the land which Yahweh your Elohim is giving you as an inheritance. Judgment

  23. Principles:1. The rules for men and womenare different.2. When a woman marries,it irrevocably seversall her earlier marital vows. Principles

  24. Ma’asei (Acts) 17:3030 Truly, these times of ignorance Elohim overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent….

  25. - This is not intended to judge anyone.- Most of us have spotted pasts.- What happened before salvationtook place before the salvation.- Our goal is to make a better world for our children. Principles

  26. Qorintim Aleph (1 Corinthians) 7:2424 Brethren, let each one remain with Elohim in that state in which he was called.

  27. Let each one remain…. The problem is believers in Yeshuawho understand Torah, yet who do not remain in the same calling in which they were called.

  28. - Marriage between two believers is a vow unto Yahweh.(Marriage between non-believers is something else.)- Yahweh expects us to fulfill our vows.- Nothing we do can ever nullify vows we make to Yahweh. Principles

  29. Qohelet (Ecclesiastes) 5:4-54 When you make a vow to Elohim, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed — 5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

  30. “I promise to love, honor and cherish, in sickness and in health, until death parts us,unless I change my mind,in which case I will get a divorce from city hall, which means Yahweh is now OK with it.”- (Yahweh forbid)

  31. When you marry a woman, don’t you have a relationship with her for life?Especially if you have children, isn’t there a relationship for life? Can anything change that?

  32. “I take thee as my lawful wedded wife forever, but if I divorce you,we no longer have a relationship.”(Yahweh forbid!)

  33. When you marry,or even when you break breadwith others in Israel, you now have a relationship for life.Is it a good relationship?Or is it a bad relationship?

  34. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 22:1313 "If any man takes a wife, and goes in to her, and detests her,14 and charges her with shameful conduct, and brings a bad name on her, and says, 'I took this woman, and when I came to her I found she was not a virgin,'

  35. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 22:1515 then the father and mother of the young woman shall take and bring out the evidence of the young woman's virginity to the elders of the city at the gate.16 And the young woman's father shall say to the elders, 'I gave my daughter to this man as wife, and he detests her.

  36. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 22:1717 Now he has charged her with shameful conduct, saying, "I found your daughter was not a virgin," and yet these are the evidences of my daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the cloth before the elders of the city.

  37. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 22:1818 Then the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him;(i.e., do what it takes to get him to repent)

  38. Devarim (Deuteronomy) 22:1919 and they shall fine him 100 shekels of silver (3+ years wages) and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought a bad name on a virgin of Israel. And she shall be his wife; he cannot divorce her all his days.(b/c she has not done anything to justify a divorce.)

  39. 1. When a man or woman commits adultery, the punishment is death by stoning.2. Yahweh gives men more authority in marriage,so He holds them more accountable.3. Yahweh expects the men to hold each other accountable. Principles

  40. 4. Divorce is not intended to be permanent. 5. Divorce is intended as a temporary correction (“time out”), only to be applied in cases of sexual immorality.- (More compassionate than stoning, but it puts her in a jam, which forces her to repent.) Principles

  41. Mattityahu (Matthew) 1:1919 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.(More compassionate than stoning.)

  42. 6. Divorce does not “free a woman to remarry”(but instead he/she is supposed to repent).7. However, if she does remarry, her new vow irrevocably nullifies all of her earlier marital vows. Principles

  43. Malachi 2:1313 And this is the second thing you do: You cover the altar of Yahweh with tears, With weeping and crying; So He does not regard the offering anymore, Nor receive it with goodwill from your hands.

  44. Malachi 2:1414 Yet you say, "For what reason?" Because Yahweh has been witness Between you and the wife of your youth, With whom you have dealt treacherously; Yet she is your companion And your wife by covenant.

  45. Malachi 2:1515 But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks righteous offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.

  46. Malachi 2:1616 "For Yahweh Elohim of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it covers one's garment with violence,“(meaning, it hurts the children, and society)Says Yahweh of hosts. "Therefore take heed to your spirit, That you do not deal treacherously."

  47. A. Yahweh’s ideal for marriage is lifetime monogamy (one man, one woman).B. However, men and women are different, and so the rules for men and women are different. Principles

  48. C. In Torah society, men may technically take more than one wife, if that was understood at the time of the marriage (if that was the agreement)(and if not, then not). Principles

  49. 2 Samuel 12:8-98 I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and Judah. And if that had been too little, I also would have given you much more! Principles
