How and When to teach/review the basics • Ideally at Company Drill, but …. • There are opportunities at events: • Immediately after morning roll call • Since roll call should be taken with men at arms • Great opportunity to practice manual of arms • In particular - review the manual that will be executed at dress parade • Between roll call and breakfast • Get the boys moving first thing in the morning • Put the muskets away • Get some coffee • Get some marching drill in • And any other opportunity schedule allows

With Arms; In place=> Immediately after morning roll call • Manual of Arms – Drill By the Motion • Pay attention to: • individual mechanisms of each motion • proper body positions • cadence of each motion • Square off the motions • Don’t “slur” the motions • Firing Positions • In single rank: Focus on footwork and proper arm positioning • As the Front Rank • Direct fire • Left oblique • Right oblique • As the Rear Rank • Direct Fire • Left Oblique • Right Oblique • In two ranks: Focus on footwork and proper arm positioning • While faced to the front • Direct Fire • Left Oblique • Right Oblique • Give all soldiers practice in each rank • 1. Face by the rear rank. 2. Company. 3. About—FACE. • Direct Fire • Left Oblique • Right Oblique
