  4. CLAIMaps History CLAIMaps I - 1998 • Implemented after nine provincial mining recorder offices reduced to one. • Required to replace 40,000 hardcopy maps distributed annually.

  5. CLAIMaps History CLAIMaps II - 2001 • Developed through expensive custom coding projects. • Did not anticipate the high demand that would be put on the system.

  6. CLAIMaps History CLAIMaps III - 2003 • Developed as an out-of-the-box solution using GIS and RDBMS software. • Produces 3,000,000 map images per year. • Produces 60,000 final maps per year. ESRI ArcIMS

  8. New Changes to CLAIMaps • Map output will now include PDF format. • PDF format includes 24 bit colour vs. 8 bit. • Land tenure viewable in 3D perspective. • Optional browser plugin for fly-by functionality. • New functionality promotes sustainable development concepts.

  13. Geoscience Portal Project • Minister’s Office directive as a result of feedback from client group. • Create a delivery website as an out-of-the-box solution that meets current needs. • Concentrate on delivering publications, assessment files, existing digital datasets.

  14. Highlights • Convert existing Assessment Files and Publications Maps and Reports to PDF. • Convert PDF files to “PDF searchable”. (2,000,000 pages and 150,000 maps) • Convert digital data releases to format ready for web-download. • Incorporate thematic datasets into web spatial view.

Out-of-the-box Benefits • Applications readily managed with limited available resources. • Large pool of skills available to select from. • Limited programming expertise required. • As new versions come on stream, solution systems can easily implement new functionality. • Pressure software vendors to enhance “out-of-the-box” functionality versus custom coding. • Develop common skill sets and solution methodologies across an organization.
