People at Risk for Nursing Home Abuse

This infographic, created by the partners at Rosen & Ohr law, explains the risk of elder abuse in nursing homes and other care establishments, and the signs that people need to be aware of to help prevent it. When you commit your loved one into a care home, you do so with the expectation that they will receive expert care and treatment. It can be a hard decision deciding to place someone you loved into specialized care, and you want to have the peace of mind of knowing that they are safe and comfortable. Unfortunately, cases of elder abuse in nursing homes are rampant in the US. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, financial abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, and abandonment can all occur in these institutions. While there are plenty of excellent nursing homes that take wonderful care of their clients, it is important to make sure that you know the signs of elder abuse, as it will help you pick a good care home for your loved one and spot any possible abuse early on. You want to stay away from homes that have any documented abuse cases. It is also important to avoid homes with high staff turnover rates, as this can indicate an unstable or unsafe environment. Check the staff to patient ratio, to make sure there are enough caregivers present in the facility. Once your loved one is admitted to a care home, it is important to watch out for signs of abuse, such as unexplained cuts or bruises, unexplained depression, loss of interest in formerly enjoyed activities, and anything else that seems out-of-character for your loved one. This infographic will give you the basic information you need to keep your loved one safe and healthy during their time living in an assisted care facility.
