  1. How to Square A 2x4 Marc Nutini

  2. Step 1 • I will demonstrate the steps of how to square a warped and twisted 2x4x3’ piece of stock. • The first step to squaring a board is picking the piece you want. Examples (Oak, Pine, Maple)

  3. Step 2 • Set the jointer so it cuts about 1/32-1/16 of an inch per pass. • Take the piece and place it wide side down and run it through the jointer. • It’s important to apply even pressure to the board as you pass over the cutters as shown below.

  4. What Board Should Look Like • This is what the board should look like after you have flattened it. • At this point the board should lie flat on a table.

  5. Step 3 • Now place the face that was just planed up against the jointer fence like shown and joint one of the edges. • Again about 1/16” is about what you want to remove per pass.

  6. Step 4 • Bring board to the table saw • Adjust the fence to take off about 1/8” of material. • Make sure the jointed face is down and the jointed edge is against the fence.

  7. Step 5 • Now I would flip the board over and take another 1/8” from the other side. • Make sure the jointed face is still face down.

  8. Step 6 • Now it is time to plane the other face. • This makes the board the same thickness throughout the piece. • This is what a planer looks like.

  9. More About the Planner • You want to make sure the jointed face is face down. • If you have more than one board do them all the same way to assure a consistent thickness on all boards. • You can’t do this on a jointer because the board will not be the same thickness from end to end.

  10. Another Option • Precision Try squares, combination squares, and framing squares are also good for squaring boards or panels.

  11. Other ways • Plane board • Joint one edge • Table saw second edge (ripping) • Joint second edge to desired width • Cut one end of board square about 1/8” from end • Measure length and cut second end
