  1. PDS-NSSDC MOU history • PDS-NSSDC MOU circa 1994 • Reviewed in Nov 2006 • Add words to remove HQ changes • Change Master Directory to Catalog • Remove the requirement for 50 CD-ROMs • Alternate approach to compose manifest for MPGA • Level of service from “second site” to “full archive” • what is a “standard” distribution volume? • details of electronic and “data brick” details of such transfer agreed upon by the PDS and NSSDC • Modification of Data Distribution paragraphs to reflect current status

  2. Draft NSSDC/PDS MOU Updatefor Distribution Options C. Data Distribution (VI), first 2 paragraphs The distribution of planetary data will be a function shared by NSSDC and the PDS. The only exception to this rule will be the distribution of pre-PDS data archived at NSSDC. NSSDC shall be primarily responsible for storing and distributing these products.NSSDC will be responsible for the distribution of partial or complete data sets from requests which are considered ‘standard’ in the sense that the request may be fulfilled by the straight-forward duplication of one or more tapes or disks. Distribution of all non-machine-readable planetary data products (such as photo products and videos) will be the sole responsibility of NSSDC. The PDS will have distribution responsibility for filling requests for small amounts of digital data (i.e. a single or partial tape or disk volume), or for requests which require manipulation of the data or the assistance of scientific expertise within the PDS in the preparation of the distribution. The distribution of all data being stored at Data Nodes will be the responsibility of the PDS.

  3. Draft NSSDC/PDS MOU Updatefor Distribution Options C. Data Distribution (VI), first 2 paragraphs MODIFIED BY MA/EG The distribution of planetary data is primarily the responsibility of PDS for digital data. For pre-PDS data and non-digital data (photo products and videos) archived at NSSDC, NSSDC will be the exclusive distributor of those products. For data archived through PDS, NSSDC will provide to users only data that can be delivered as a direct copy of medium, such as a DVD or CD or DLT, already archived at NSSDC. NSSDC will respond to requests from PDS nodes for delivery of occasional large-volume datasets. All other requests, and particularly for all requests that require insight into the scientific content of the data or packaging in units smaller than those delivered to NSSDC, PDS will be the sole supplier of data.

  4. Draft NSSDC/PDS MOU Updatefor Delivery Options C. Data Distribution (VI), last paragraph As the PDS releases new products for archive, these products will be transmitted to NSSDC in a mutually agreed manner. For data releases on CD, DVD, or similar media, the PDS shall provide NSSDC with a set of these volumes. For data to be sent electronically or on “data bricks” , the details of such transfer shall be devised and agreed upon by the PDS and NSSDC. These shall include quality assurance and remote storage of backups by NSSDC.
